Help to identify and value a Merlin Rocket part of a deceased's estate

18/10/2016 20:23:06
Please can you help ? Where should we look to find out the value and identification on a Merlin Rocket? It's name is Electra and it is in Northumberland. It's part of the estate of my son's father, and none of us are sailors so are adrift.
Thank you for any advice you can offer

sail number would help enormously.

once we know that an educated guess is fairly straightforward

The boat/sail number should be carved either into the thwart or on the hog (the wooden plank that runs from the rear of the centreboard case to the middle of the transom) just behind the stern end of the centreboard case.  This is more reliable than the number on the sail as the owner may have bought in sails from another boat and not changed the sail number.

Wow- thank you for the speedy replies. I'll get a look in the light tomorrow and see what we can find and post then.

There is an Electra listed in the book - and an Electra II

The former is 1409, a Proctor IX built by Bob Hoare

Electra II is 1639 a Proctor XVI by Chippendale.

Both are pretty common, and built by good builders. Value depends on condition, £0 - £100 (Very sad) to £500-£600 (Extremely good). This assumes origional style alloy rig and period equipment.

Both should go well on the river or on a small reservoir, i think for this purpose the Mk IX is possibly the better of the two.

Hello folks,
Sail has MR 1409 on it.
Boat is fine -it's got 2 sails, mast, rudder and a cover, airbags and has been garaged on a trestle. The trailer has been outside and is very poor.
It's currently near Haltwhistle in Northumberland.
Any help and advice in valuing or where to sell it gratefully recieved.
Thank you.

Its quite hard to put a firm value on it - some go for next to nothing, others for a few hundred pounds. With no functional trolley or trailer I think you're looking at £300-£400 tops assuming the boat itself is ready to sail.

The classic line is true - it's worth what someone will pay.

You could try an advert in your local sailing club (s) and also put up one on the For Sale section of this website.  I suspect that it will not be a quick process.

Some photo's would help - a good sound boat is always of interest. Also consider an advert on Apollo Duck.

A Hoare mk lX is a thing of beauty. I understand he built them with the rise of floor measurement bang on the outside of the plank lands. Certainly my boat, 1761 and 1222 Restless lV are pretty rapid.

Hi.
I've only just found this post. So please pass on and if you / they could respond if be grateful.

1409 is a Proctor IX. Built by Bob Hoare of Christchurch. The IX was really unstable(hairy) downwind. The IXB was better I was the second owner. I bought it in 1969 is from ??? Matthews.
I changed the name to ELECTRA from Dixie.
I took it to the northeast to sell it for £300
I also put In the transom flaps.

If you have a photo or two, please send to me.

Peter  -   for the record (see 'Boat names' under the 'About' page)    -   Why did you change the name to Electra?
It's good to record the history.

1409..was owned from new by John Matthews who sailed at Arun YC, Littlehampton which had a good MR fleet in those days.
