Got a bit windy out there today, 2 races back to back, lots of exhaustion in fittings and bodies in my bit of the fleet, managed a capsize & turtle in each race today but at least finished both which is an improvement on Sunday (elastic holding toestraps up snapped so missed toestraps & fell out of boat breaking ANOTHER carbon tiller extension). Respect to the leaders making it look so easy!

Andrew, maybe the next one you buy should be ali!

Despite this weather I am still wishing I was there and not sitting in my office reading the reports.

Looking at the ongoing weather forecast, looks as if it could be a big week like Abersoch. Just got back from a full on B14 Euros where on one boat survived race 1 without capsizing only to be OCS. Chin Scar Charlotte Jones and Tony Blackmore did a storming job in teh race in 30+ knot winds. Not so us as we planted it on a gybe.

Merlin champs looks as if it will go to the guys who know the gears and maintain the fitness of both crew and boat. Should be there. Gealous now!!

Any overall results ??

29/08/2012 09:46:42
Answer
THey do not appear to have been updated, waiting protest results? It is quite usual in regattas where the results are online that after the first day the results are post immediately but as the work load on the helpers increases so does the time lag on updating results.

According to facebook - no sailing today - 2 races scheduled for tomorrow.

Still no results from Tuesday though. I would really like to know how the bulk of the fleet is getting on.

When you consider the amount of money the class give to a sailing club to host the nationals, (and there is not a shortage of clubs willing to host 80 boats) I would think the least they could do is produce results for the world at large.

There is always the option to be there and compete yourself. I would humbly suggest that, whilst the income from hosting a championship would be welcome to any club, it is never going to make them a fortune, once laying on all the deliverables, rescue boats, committee boats etc. are taken into account. I suspect that the championship at Lyme Regis Sailing Club is being put on by volunteers, who probably don't need the critism. Meanwhile Tim's reports are great, well done Tim.

Lyme has a waiting list for nationals and has turned down more high profile events, we run events for classes that are fun to host and enjoy visting us. I suspect that there good reasons for non publication of results ie a possible protest yet to be heard, lets hope it's not BFD related.

I am sure there is a reason that they have not been posted but most championship results are posted as 'subject to protest' if they are.

Yes the reports have been excellent so far, just lack the results to back them up. Unfortunately, and understandably, the reports only focus on the top 4 or 5 boats and that does not include any of my club members!

Being on the committee I am partial to allot of the behind the scenes conversations and I can assure you that Lyme Regis Sailing Club will be making very little out of this and when they agreed to do it there was a real risk of actually losing from it.

I would not want any club feeling the we are ungratefull that they and their members have gone to such trouble to stage our event. We need these clubs to contiue to welcombe our class and host our Championships.

Taxi and stu are equal on points. Can't remember the rest. Raining so hard i had to change once i got to the club this morning. Big seas on the beach and blowing dogs off chains too.

Southwesterly veering northwesterly later, 5 to 7. Moderate or rough, becoming very rough in Plymouth and north Biscay. Squally showers. Mainly good

Ps Yacht on the webcam is the committee boat. At least the rain has stopped but it us still too much for pondies or lightweights or both!

Off we go again to do to races back to back after the appalling weather yesterday from morning till mid-afternoon. Tuesday was pretty knackering, have a look at the photos on Fotoboat which give a good idea of the sea conditions. Boat and self still in one piece though buoyancy comprehensively tested in all 3 races, though at least we finished both on Tuesday, many didn't. Stu decided that as it was too windy for Merlin sailing he would go off kite-surfing instead.

Tim, many thanks for your excellent reports in Y&Y. Really give the flavour of the challenges to the fleet, front and back. Slightly relieved we are not there this year. Lots of practice to do for Tenby. Did you really get up to post your copy at 6.08 am? Tim's report at http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/news/165524/Selden-Merlin-nationals-day-5 also includes full results to Race 5.

Off for the final day's racing. A bit full on yesterday, 1st mast went on way out to start - nice and sheltered close in but once out there a solid breeze with gusts and holes and quite choppy seas. We managed to finish both races, after a capsize on the way out when the tiller extension fell off and then 3 during the 1st race, makes up for missing out at Salcombe this year I guess. All bar one turtling with the kite up, messy!

Most unlucky were Tim & Rebecca Male who were capsized between the races by a monster gust that nearly flattened us too while we were munching Tracker bars, and managed to break the mast on something whilst over 2 miles out to sea!

Stu Bithell, having given us a cheery wave and grin as he shot past us to lap us in the 1st race showed he is human after all by capsizing in the 2nd and going home.

P.S. at least another 6 masts went I think! Good day for the boatbuilders.

Off to replace a toestrap after Ellie had an out of boat experience

Good day for boat builders but poor day for Insurance premiums next year in the Merlin class I fear.

3 masts plus one earlier in the week.

1 shroud failure.
2 stuck in bottom.
1 cause of destruction unknown!

For those interested, which I am sure your not!! Stu & Cristian pulled it off with a 2nd in the last race closely followed by Taxi & Tom in 3rd. Stu won overall by a point. Tricky Dicky took line honours, Geoff & Graham got Black Flagged along with a host of others.

Apologies for the exaggeration of mast failures, there was a lot of carnage and boats with bits falling off and as well as that, going round and round in vigorous conditions I have probably counted the broken twigs twice.

Yesterday we had a final race in much more manageable conditions with a gentle breeze gradually building to F4 for the last couple of laps. After being considerably more line-shy in the big breeze the fleet were back to normal and 11 boats were sent to the naughty corner for the day. Always helpful for results my end of the fleet!

A big thank you to Lyme SC and the organisers for a great champs, not their fault that the weather was a bit vigorous, but we got the 6 races in & the support was 1st class.
