Twenty-six Merlin Rockets gathered at Banbury Sailing Club to compete in the Silver Tiller Event on 10th April. The wind was fresh, the sun was shining and all was set for a fantastic day's racing for sailors and spectators alike.
Races 1 & 2 saw the full fleet spread along (but not over) the start line and all boats got away without cause for recall.
The Easterly component of the wind, ensured the sailors skills were tested with Starboard rounding of the first mark for the first two races – which they coped with great skill and no incident. The downwind leg was set to go from one corner of the reservoir to the other and gave plenty of chance to race. Over all, the round the cans course saw some very close racing at every end of the fleet with positions changing lap by lap including at the front – Chris Gould (3778) taking race 1 and Simon Potts (3777) taking race 2.
Following Lunch, the fleet set off for the decider. A hotly contested start led to a general recall and black flag restart, which was observed with no further incident. The "sawtooth" course gave plenty of upwind and short downwind legs to further test the sailors and once again Chris Gould took line honours and the event win.
Banbury Sailing Club enjoyed hosting this amazing fleet and look forward to seeing them again next year.
