Please find attached the Entry Form for next years Salcombe Merlin Week. http://www.salcombeyc.org.uk/images/docs/syc%20merlin%20week%20entry%20form%202014.doc |
I take it these are copied year on year as nowhere does it show the actual dates of the event! |
Dates are listed on the SYC website. http://www.salcombeyc.org.uk/news/13-merlin-rocket/57-merlin-rocket-week-2014 |
And here is a link to the Notice of Race with the Dates. http://www.salcombeyc.org.uk/images/docs/salcombe%20merlin%20week%20entry%20form%202014.doc |
Hi Jane - will the accepted entries be posted on the SYC web site to confirm receipt? |

Maybe it's my failing eyesight, or just old age, but I could not find the dates of Salcombe Week anywhere on the NOR or entry form. I have already booked accommodation for the week 5 July to 12 July: can anyone confirm that this is the correct week? |
Salcombe Merlin Week described as being from 6th to 11th July 2014 on the Club website. You should be OK. |
Thanks. Yes, it is my failing eyesight: I can now see the reference in this thread (above) to a link to the dates. But would it not have been simpler just to put the dates on the NOR??? |
the date is on the notice of race. look at the photo. it is a little hidden though |
The first link from Jayne is without the date. The second link (4th post) has the date as described by John M |
Lot's of entriies now, although I can't see who is the 59th and 61st entry? You might want to check your numbering. |
And check my spelling and grammer at the same time!! |
Is there a posted list of entries? |
Yes Luke see above or below!! http://www.salcombeyc.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=43&class=merlin-rocket&result=%5Emerlin-rocket%5ESharps-Doom_Bar_Merlin_Rocket_Week_2014 |
Has anyone noticed who Keith Callaghan has got to helm for him? |
Certainly do! Welcome back Colin! |
Maybe even Andy Gray will show up! |
One month in, 84 entries and lots of big names still to enter. Time to talk to the harbour master about increasing the 120 boat limit?! |
Tim - did you deliberately open a can of worms? |
I'm with you there 100% Antony! |
It the profit they want isn't it. Understandable when clubs are increasingly aspirational in their on shore facilities, the sailors have to at least pay their way so the social drinkers and diners can do so in comfort! |
We're not seasoned veterans of Salcombe week having only three under our belt, but we've found it to be a superb event, rain wind or shine, well organised by the club with a great sense of continuity and cameraderie. However it would be very welcome if the club could negotiate a discounted rate with the locals for accomodation during the week. This year a new rate was introduced with one of the letting companies which added a significant amount to the holiday total. |
The fleet size has increased by 10 boats in any one race, but the start line has increased in length by a third AND you can actually choose an end to start from. I've done two Salcombe weeks and this years was significantly less fraught than last! |
Fraught is what separates the men and women from the girls and boys. |
Even at low tide the start line is not increased by one third. However the additional space is material compared to the extra boats |
As a Kingsbridge boy who grew during the early 80's not being able to afford to join the members of the 'posh' yacht club and race I used to potter about and watch the Merlin's when I was younger, even managing to scrape the cash together to buy a relatively new boat for £500 that someone had simply abandoned at the boat yard after a bad Salcombe week! At that time Salcombe was a mecca for the Gin and Tonic yacht brigade, with 4 boats abreast on every mooring during the summer and prices across town to match! I feel Salcombe is a shadow of its former self in this respect and all the better for it from a sailors perspective. Everything now seems to me to be much more affordable in real terms and you can actually find some accommodation (and cheap if you stay away form the water front or even move a mile out of town), space on the water and beaches and get a table for dinner. As for the costs of competing it seems like an absolute bargain when you compare it to other sports and look at what you get for your money, the amount of people it takes to organise such an event and all the social activities laid on.... what's the problem? |
Thank you for the 114 entries for Merlin Week 2014 so far. |
Still some notable absences, Dalby, Whitworth to name but two. |
Oops! I have been very off the ball with my entry this year... Mine will be in the post tomorrow morning... Hopefully there will be space still! :-S |
