Topic : THE LAST SILVER TILLER EVENT AT TAMESIS

1st John Bell, 2nd Ben Hollis.

I understand that because there are no traveling members from Tamesis Club sailing in other events ( the vintage series, the river series and the Silver Tiller events), apart from their own, that this will be the last Silver Tiller Event at Tamesis, I think this is a great shame, not because its a great venue, not because there are too many trees, not because it has the largest merlin fleet in the country, but its the passing of an era,, I think there has to be a major rethink, from the Merlin Association, do the Committee wish to cut its ties with the past, and the ground roots of sailing Merlins, Upper Thames Sailing Club, Minima, and sailing at Putney will all be gone , if not already, but because one or two merlin sailors are Committee members are from Cookham or Hampton, or happened to do the Silver Tiller events at the moment, then these venues will be discarded forever, please tell me why?

I look forward to all of your imput,

Hi Martin,
This hasn't come up at any committee meeting I've been to in the last 12 months and I've not heard the rumour. But now there is clearly a well spread rumour. And it's on the Internet so it must be true.

hi martin,

great racing today at tammy. Chris martin does the fixture list which will be up soon.
i was asked a question on saturday evening at the club as to why i ignored the "deal" that river clubs have when i firsts started to look at the fixture list.
i answered the question honestly which was i had no idea that there was such a "deal' in place. i was then asked what could be done to guarantee a tammy event every year.i answered honestly again which was it can never be guaranteed. i said the best way to get people attracted to the club is by traveling out to the other events on the series at no point did anyone mention the last one!!!!!
doing the fixtures is a difficult task and i am sorry if i did a bad job of fitting tammy in.
chinese whispers is a dangerous game martin !!!!!
tammy was great ay

So far as I know all the river clubs that still want a silver Tiller will still get one on our rota basis. Yes there was a slip up on it last year but never a mention of stopping any of them!

Also, where is my mast Martin! !!!!!!!??????

Hi Ben

I believe part of the discussion on Saturday afternoon at Tammy was around the fact that a few years ago there was a debate between the River Thames clubs and the MROA committee (via email at least) as to how to allow all the River Thames clubs a fair share of the ST events. This happened when Mike Stephens was SE/London rep and l believe lead to an agreement that each club who wanted a ST event (not all do) would be offered one every other year and that each year two River Thames clubs would have a ST event - i.e. Hampton/Tamesis one year, Cookham/Upper Thames the next, and so on a round robin basis. I am not aware myself that Tamesis is necessarily demanding to have a ST event EVERY year. Every other year would be fair though I think.

Thanks Martin for your defence of Tammy. However, we have had travellers at both Vintage and Thames Series events over recent years up to and including last year (just check the previous overall Vintage and Thames Series results on the Merlin results webpage).

Anyway, it was indeed a great day's river sailing. See you at Ranelagh next Sunday for the final round of the Thames Series. Overall results after today's meeting will be posted tomorrow.

Cheers.

PS, also great to see a turnout of 21 boats today, with 14 of them being from visiting clubs!

News to me.

We have a rotation system on the Thames, there was a hiccup in the handover, but that's all it was.

I think Tamesis will next be up in 2015.
