Topic : Grafham results and pictures

Full results for the 'Grafham Grail' are on GWSC site.
There is still a mistake as John and Graham were third on Sunday morning (not 9th). This means that everyone between 4th and 9th in that race goes down a place. The only change to the Silver Tiller results is that Duncan goes up to 6th and Colin goes down to 7th as they both have 11 points but Duncan wins on tie break!

Colin - according to Graham they beat you on Sunday morning giving you a 4th?
Tom was 1st but OCS. So Mike was 1st, Glen 2nd, then John/Graham? (I am told), you were next - 4th not 3rd? then we were next just in front of Dickie Dee.
Is this right? John and Graham were recorded as 9th but this was wrong it seems. Glen thinks that John was 3rd so I have amended the results - I can't remember where they were. Let me know your views.
I am not in my office so I wont pick up emails till tomorrow.

There was ALOT more pictures than 12! As there was thumbnail prints of them at the sailing club. Where can we find them?

Sorry to persist on this but in that case we had 11 points but had a better discard than Duncan 10 against 11 and we beat him in the last race

As for Charlotte Rampling me and Marty are both Sandra Bullock men

Hi Colin,

Apologies for this coming out after you had left, but I didn't get to see the results until just before we came home.

Your scores were:
4; 10; 7 = 11 with discard

Duncan's scores were:
11; 3; 8 = 11 with discard

Duncan's 3rd places him ahead of you, making him 6th and you 7th for the Silver Tiller.

I never knew the best result is the way to split a tiebreak, always thought it was either the last race or the actual discard ??

Under the standard RRS, it is the most number of 1st, most number of 2nds etc etc until the tie is broken, only then if there is still a tie, e.g. 1 10 3 versus 3 1 10 then it goes to the last race both sailed in.

So in this case the most number of 3rds took it.

Colin - I am afraid they are right. The tie break rules have been like this since 2001.
They have deleted one very confusing paragraph in the new rules (2005-2008) but we still can't get you in front of Duncan.
I thought you deserved a better place too - you were one of the few boats to get up in the front of every race!

ok never knew that i bow down to greater wisdom

as i said great racing and our task is to stay up front

goddam spinnaker rings in the front of the mast are always dificult to get in fast after a gybe(exit 15 places). dan was talking about his system of 2 rings, anybody find that better

Have you tried releasing the snodger....?

Ive led my snodger to a block under the mainsheet block (expensively i might add) but like Judiths system were she has lead it to the side controls. Think i will do that but its just not quite the clunk clink every time feeling with the pole

I'm not sure that having them on the side is the best place during a Gybe. Think about it, on the gybe the crew has to step to the middle to release the pole, so the helm also steps to the middle and low and behold the snodger will be right there between their feet.

The slightly tricky bit was letting it off on the last leg of the triangle whilst going at full tilt, thats when having it on the side may help.

Colin,

I system you have is fine, as is the position of the cleat under the mainsheet. It works really well when the downhaul is attached to the end of the mainsheet. When your sat out on a windy reach you can really pull it on hard and at the gybe its easy for both helm/crew to release.

The reach down to the wing mark was broad, making the second reach tight. Many crews where struggling with the pole, including myself, due to helm heading up hard after rounding the mark (sorry Duncan you only did once or twice!). When the boats pointed up onto a tight reach, or higher, the spinnaker is almost flying out the back of the boat. The force of the guy is then pushing the pole directly back at the crew.

A bit of communication and where possible a slightly wider rounding helps when it’s windy.

Colin if we beat you then guess its one beer to us!

See you at Cookham.

Never thought before about heading up too quick and creating too much pressure hum you are right do it smoothly then head up. i was sooooooooooo anxious to shut out anybody coming to windward. Marty you are forgiven
#will attach my snodger rope to mainsheet in future and look forward to perfect gybes in the future

will get you a beer at cookham for that

spoken like a trooper Liam. Gybing is 99% coordination with helm & 1% grunt. Anything else is slow & indicates more practice needed unless of course Harry Helm wants to shut out an attack by luffing hard at the gybe mark.

As regards Grafham Liam, Col & I don't mind - just be careful getting on a chairlift with us next winter...

Alan - we decided to put our snodger strings to the side controls because we didn't like reaching in to grab it on the back of the centreboard case on a windy reach on the sea - the weight all goes in the wrong place when you least want it. Where it is now, I just grab it to release it as we're both starting to move into the centre of the boat, and it also means that Philly can reach it if he needs to, particularly when he's hiking. We've not had any problems with it yet, but time might tell!!

Liam, you should get a new helm, Natt always bears away when you ask her to after the gybe mark :-)

We had the snodger led to either side in our last boat - the first to do so I think in a Winder, and have stuck with it on our new one. It really is the best position:

Helm can pull it on if not too windy, crew can do it if the helm is already on the transom when the kite fills if it is v. windy. If it's windy I just let it off on my way forward to get the kite down.

Still reckon there should be a way of attaching it to the rear toestraps though!?

Still would have thought the ring at the front could be designed better so you are not leaning around the mast to put it on

agreed leading it to the side looks best.

I sailed boats with both systems. When its windy there is no chance of getting that ring to end of the pole with it lead to each side. Having the end of the mainsheet tied to the downhaul means you can rap the mainsheet round your hand and give it some!

Marty,

Better get your chairlift order in quick if you want one for next winter. Thora Hird's waiting list is longer than Windy's - Col: Seems like you should put Marty out to grass if he's getting too weak to get the pole on.
