Topic : TackTick Compass

I tried that last year but for me when its time for a battery to go to the great compass in the sky it's time to go and no amount of charging will fix it , ended up forking out the raymarine cost which is still well below the new costs but maybe you can find a battery from somewhere

Fran's right?as you would expect :-) Even at this time of year, leaving it in direct sunlight for a few hours should top-up the batteries enough to keep it going for a while. Where you have the Tacktick bracket on the boat will affect how well it charges when you are sailing; if you have a mast mounted bracket that sits the compass close to the gooseneck the boom will obscure the charging panel for a significant percentage of the time you are sailing.

I don't know if anybody has tried charging their Tacktick with a UV lamp but that might work; particularly those lamps intended to relieve the symptoms of SADD as the treatment is 'supposed' to mimic exposure to sunlight. Just a thought.

Just in case its a misdiagnosis.....

My tacktick doesn't work very well in the winter. When I turn it on it often tells me I have between 10 and 40 minutes of battery life rather than the summer 180 (or maybe 200) whichever the maximum is. It has been known to turn itself off for this reason while sailing due to lack of sunlight to keep it going while racing. In Summer it is fine.

I did call Raymarine about this and they said it won't charge indoors (i.e. through windows), so I need to leave it outside to get full sunlight in winter. Which is surprisingly difficult where I live.

So if your compass has been in its case for a prolonged period it maybe that it just needs a good spell outside on a sunny day.

Or it could be that you need a new battery. But just in case.

My battery went flat too and no amount of sun would charge it. I too took mine apart but decided not to try and remove the battery. I bought a new one in the end from a chap on Ebay for £175. Much easier.

My TackTick compass has failed or at least the battery element of it has.
Having taken it apart which is not as difficult as you might think (although you have to be very gentle with the various locking tabs) I find the battery is a Sanyo ML2430 HZ1. Am certain about the ML2430 not so sure about the HZ1 part which, I think, refers to the disposition of the pins. Think HZ refers to a HoriZonral mounting which is what it has in the Tacktick Micro. So, can anyone 1) confirm it is a ML2430 HZ1 & 2) Provide me with a supplier of this battery in the UK?
I have spoken to RayMarine who recently purchased TackTick but they want £150 + Carriage + VAT which is close to the cost of a new one & in my opinion a bit steep for a replacement battery...
Anyway, to complete the picture for interested parties the internals of the compass look well thought out & well engineered. The battery is soldered into position behind the port side display & mounted horizontally on the circuit board which is vertical in use. To remove the battery one would need a small good quality soldering iron, a solder suction tool & a pair of plastic tweezers. To take the unit apart I used a small flat bladed screwdriver (to prise the lock tabs apart, a pack of cocktail sticks (to hold lock tabs open) & a larger flat bladed screwdriver (to prise to two sections of the case apart).

If anyone else is going to do this do take care with the locking tabs which, in my opinion, are a bit fragile.

So, can anyone 1) confirm the battery is a ML2430 HZ1 & 2) Provide me with a supplier of this battery in the UK?

You might get a wider audience posting on the Y&Y forum. I cannot believe a battery costs £150, though do be wary of a replacement that is very cheap; they just don't last as long.

For a device where battery access is a pain, you want to pay for the best brand, else you'll be doing it again in 3 months. For a smoke alarm, get a decent one. For a kids toy, the cheap and cheerful batteries on Amazon/ebay will do, though you'll save money with rechargeable AA and AAAs.

A significant price break at 25 units on the last link...Puts the £150 offer into perspective.

I once mounted the tacktik upside down. Although this didn't immediately have an effect on the battery life tacking through 500 odd degrees confused the hell out of us.

I have had the same problem and could not find a supplier who would sell me one, with minimum order value and carriage and tax I finished paying £80!!! so I am selling the rest off for £18 each including post and packing. My compass is one of the newer grey ones, which you can't turn off. It was bleeping at me all the time I was soldering in the new battery. Tested it at the weekend and it worked fine. The batteries I have are the same as the original :- Sanyo ML2430-HZ1
If you want one e-mail me "[email protected]"
