Hi Barnsie,

Free camping, free motorhome parking, all within immediate proximity of the club. Great that you’re thinking of coming and have started this thread, I will be posting more info in the next few days, but essentially the following applies:

28th and 29th April
Aldeburgh YC Silver Tiller
£30 entry
Free camping/motorhomes
Five races sailed on the very beautiful River Alde
Exact evening plan in the planning as we speak

The club have always really enjoyed the two Merlin opens they’ve hosted in the past, and are very much looking forward to welcoming all attending merlins.

Any further questions or if I can help with anything, drop me an email or give me a call.

(Am just on holiday this week, but will definitely still respond. Very keen that this will be a great event).

13.30....

The NoR is up on the AYC website. I’m not very good at linking from my phone unfortunately.

It’s on the front page of Aldeburghyc.org.uk.

Upwards of 20 boats confirmed.

All welcome.

More info still to follow, just confirming dinner plans....

Hi Everyone,

Final plans are now in place.  The NoR and Sailing Instructions are upon the AYC website:

http://www.aldeburghyc.org.uk/merlin-rocket-open-218-29-april/

The caterers are pulling all the stops out (they cater for Prince Charles sometimes I think) and a Sailor's Supper will be served between 6.30 and 8pm. It will be delicious and a great get together, the bar will be open and we can all discuss all things merlin, east coast, Suffolk anything you like really.

I do need food orders though (by Tuesday 24th April).... The options are as follows:

Fish pie with cheesy mash and greens

chicken rogan curry with rice and poppadum's

vegetarian tagine, served with rice

lemon tart with coulis

chocolate torte with vanilla cream

All for £10.50 for two courses. Children £6.

All welcome of course including non-sailors.

If you know you're coming, I hope you'd like to eat with us all, please drop me an email with your food choices....

[email protected]

Looking forward to being inundated with emails.

As in previous posts above, free camping (its not supersoft so bring camping mattresses or similar, and maybe a mallet), free motorhome parking.

First race 13.30 on Saturday.  5 races in total.

Bacon/egg rolls available on Sunday morning, book these when entering too....

Any issues at all please give me a call 07810446377.  I may well be able to help with crews/helms..... logistics.

We really are looking forward to welcoming lots of merlins to the very beautiful Alde.

Fran

Hi Matt,

I’m pretty sure that will be fine. Will check the exact details on that subject tomorrow.

Hi Fran
Boat drop and camper parking Friday night preferred here as well please if it is to be a viable trip for us!
If the club is not open Friday night is there a nearby pub for food?

Hi Everyone,

Boat drop off and overnight camping/motorhome parking on Friday is absolutely fine.  If you google directions to Aldeburgh Yacht Club, you will see that it is at the very far end of town.  It is along a long-ish gravel drive.  Half-way along the drive it splits and you can break left up a slope onto a higher level (sea wall).

On arrival (on Friday or Saturday), split left onto the higher level.  You will drive along and see the clubhouse on your right and the dinghy park down below you on your right.  As you get to the end of the dinghy park, there is a fork right back down onto ground level.  There is a gate, for which I now have the code.  This area is the motorhome and camping area.  (as before - bring a mallet and some kind of mattress/camping mat - it is quite hard underfoot).

If you didn't break left up onto the sea wall, continuing on the lower level, the end of the drive is the main club carpark.  If its easier, there will be no issue with dropping a boat off in this carpark or indeed sleeping in your motorhome in the main carpark on Friday night, but there is plenty of space down the far end (through the gate - for which I have the code).

The club bar may or may not be open. I think unlikely but not impossible - do check.  But back down the drive is the town (you will have driven through it), with lots of pubs.  The White Hart is the nearest and is a nice pub for a beer.  (I don't think it does food though).  The Cross Keys, slightly further into town does food (and is also nice).

White Hart is a 10 minute walk from the club.  (The drive seemed very very long when I was a child but now doesn't seem to be very long).

Thanks for the food orders that have arrived so far - please keep sending them through.

Yes, Thanks to the club, Fran's parents/team and Fran for organising. Great weekend to get back in the boat after Parkstone. Close racing and felt green with envy when we had to sit out and watch the latter part of one and final windy race. Great specator sport. Looking forward to 2 years time. We're going to have to use a different board as the 200 mm longer bit seems to compromise us at Starcross, Parkstone, Aldeburgh and Salcombe. See all at Brightlingsea for some sea sailing ;)
