The early bird entry window closes on the 1st
July for the Selden Merlin Rocket
National Championships, hosted by Penzance
Sailing Club from the 13th – 19th August 2016.
Half price entry is available to helms under the age of 25,
first time helms and older boats. These will all increase, along with the
standard entry fee, on the 1st July.
We have a cracking week in store for the competitors this
year.
What to expect at this year’s Nationals.
Saturday: Competitors arrive and spend the day
registering their boats and undergoing a thorough scrutineering process by
class measurers. Hulls are weighed, measurements checked then boats are put to
bed in their allocated parking spaces for the week.
Sunday: Practice race starts at 1130 followed
back-to-back with the first race of the Championship. The Merlins use
triangle-sausage courses and aim for a target race time of 90 minutes (assuming
favourable conditions). The first day concludes with a Commodore’s reception at
the Club. PzSC are very excited to have us back and will be extending a very
warm welcome to us – the barman has an enhanced recipe for Dark n’ Stormies to
try out on us too!
Monday: Race 2
warning signal not before 1155. The evening’s entertainment involves more
music, dancing and some fancy dress – taken very seriously by the fleet – with
a theme of Pirates, Rum and Rio!
Tuesday: Race 3
warning signal not before 1155 and followed back-to-back by a crew’s race if
conditions allow. A slightly more relaxing evening is planned with local
Pasties and Cider on offer at the Sailing Club.
Wednesday: Race 4
warning signal not before 1155. Whilst the steering committee head off to the
local Polgoon Vineyard to sample the local grape juice, the crews union
assemble for fun and games with everyone rendezvousing at the Club for last
orders.
***PLEASE LET US KNOW IN THE COMMENTS BELOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO GO TO POLGOON VINEYARD -
WE NEED TO RESERVE PLACES AND PAY A DEPOSIT BEFOREHAND***
Thursday: A mega
race 5 for the fleet – the Champagne Race. Typically a 2 hour marathon that
sees the first 21 boats to finish rewarded with a bottle of Champagne,
generously donated by Winder Boats.
The fizz will be accompanied by a Hog Roast and band at the Club.
Friday: The 6th
and final race has a warning signal no earlier than 1155 and no later than
1400, unless fewer than three races have been completed. This will be followed
by a beer tasting from a selection of locally-sourced barrels and a Disco, with
the Championship prize giving to round off the week.
