Topic : Merlin Rocket trophy

A Merlin Rocket trophy (Saturday Points - presented by HD Drake Esq) from the 1950s is up for sale in New Zealand.  It has the following names on it (people / boat(s)).

D Sadler / Impala and Venus

Does anyone by chance no anything about the history of this cup?

Can only come from Parkstone Yacht Club. Surprised some its members aren't giving you an eyeful.

A big thank you to Peter, Andrew and David for their help with the history of this cup.  I was going to buy it and re-use it for a hockey trophy but, being a sailor myself, decided that things like this are part of a club's history so contacted Parkstone Yacht Club.

As a result, I did buy it, but on behalf of B Drake, Parkstone's current Commodore whose grandfather HD Drake presented the trophy in the early 1950s.

It will be returned to Parkstone Yacht Club in May 2016 when I return to the UK to visit family.

My grateful thanks to Tim for bringing this to my attention. He has subsequently purchased the trophy on my behalf and when returned to Parkstone I will decide how best to utilise it.

My grandfather, Horace Drake, was Commodore of Parkstone when he presented the trophy in 1953, for the Merlin Rocket Saturday points series. David Sadler won it 3 times in consecutive years and, in accordance with common practice in those days, got to keep it. He had won it outright.

Incidentally TJ Wardell won it 3 times but not in consecutive years!

As correctly reported  David emigrated to New Zealand and died last year, so it would appear that his heirs have put it up for sale.

I'm looking forward to receiving the trophy from Tim in May next year.
