hi all i have just purchased my first merlin sail number 2916 i do have to do some work on it to do but nothing serious what i would like to ask is does anyone know the year it was built also who built it and what model it is any help would be gratefully appreciated.

You need to find the hull number rather than rely on the sail number as the sails may be from a different boat.  You can find this number carved either into the thwart or the hog just behind the rear of the centreboard case.
 
Then you can look up details of design, builder and perhaps a previous owner of her in the MR Yearbook which you get when you join the class association.  Details of how to join on the class website.

Richard is correct that there should be a number carved in the boat, most likely the thwart in the middle if not the hog towards the back.
 
If  2916 is correct then she is a Morrison Infidel Design built in late 1974 by Laurie Smart, A very reputable builder. Her name is 'Babes in the Wood'.
