MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Rigging

I have just restored a 1962 merlin rocket and am now trying to put it together.
This is my first sailing boat as my other boats have always had an engine.
I would appreciate any tips on how to attach boom, sails and shrouds. I am a total novice when it comes to sails so I am throwing myself at the mercy of more knowledgable people.
Thanks in advance. Hope to be on the water soon.
Cheers. Andrew.

Where are you based?

If in the London area a visit to Tamesis, Upper Thames, Ranelagh or Hampton will be of benefit as there are loads of boats of that vintage there. Some ultra pimped, some not at all others in between.

Other than that the best bet is probably to post on the CVRDA and find a similar boat near you to go and have a look at.

Its much easier to see in the flesh than try to make sense of text!!

Trent Valley might be a good bet. I dont think they go for the pimped up versions there so much so you're more likely to see periodish rigging.

Other than that theres a De May Vintage event at Banbury SC on 17th October. There will be boats there that are of that age.

As Chris has said it would be best to visit a club where there are Merlins and even better some of a similar vintage to yours, however any sailing club will have members who will be able to help you with the basic rigging of your Merlin.
It really is impossible to give written advice as individual Merlins can differ quite significantly and a "hands on" approach is really needed. A search on Google should come up with a club near to you.

Thanks for all the help.
I have found a sailing club near me so when I have finished the restoration, which will be soon. I will take it along with me for some advice and maybe even get it on the water.
