Topic : Banging rudder

An outcome of Looe, for us, was the resolution of a bug we have had for a while with our boat. The symptom is a loud banging from the rudder department in moments of duress, such as when a gust hits or, in Looe when descending the face of a large wave (or, ripple, if your second name is Bithell).

This post will not apply to most of you since you will have your boat level, at all times.

For those of us in the bottom quartile, you can solve the banging rudder problem, by either, sailing your boat flat, henceforth. Or, as well, renewing the rudder tie down bungee to max out downward pressure on the stock, plus adding an R clip for good measure. Peace,
dear reader, will be then restored. Well, this was news to me, anyway.

We had a banging issue at Looe which we tracked down to a worn bush.

You don't want any play in a worn slack bush so we upgraded to a nice tight new one.

I suspect, well it was true in our case, the issue was that the rudder lifts on the pintles if there is any bear away moment applied by the helm. If, the boat is not flat the rudder then has an "elevator" moment as it tries to lift the stern. And, if the bungee is worn, (or in my case not secured tightly enough in the first place because I had not thought it through), the whole assembly lifts.

As soon as the boat is flat again, the rudder stock drops and produces a decided bang.

It is not really a problem except that, this only usually happens when there is quite a lot else going on and in moments of duress. I for one, have long found it disconcerting. Being a saddo, I am quite pleased to have resolved it.

A number of people at Looe mentioned they had the same trouble but I think only one, and I cannot recall who, maybe Tom Stewart, was able to tell me why. Anyway, bushes aside, the rudder bungee on 3698 is now maxed out.

To stop up/down play we also added a penny washer to the lower pintle. No movement up/down once the R clip was inserted.
