I suspect, well it was true in our case, the issue was that the rudder lifts on the pintles if there is any bear away moment applied by the helm. If, the boat is not flat the rudder then has an "elevator" moment as it tries to lift the stern. And, if the bungee is worn, (or in my case not secured tightly enough in the first place because I had not thought it through), the whole assembly lifts. As soon as the boat is flat again, the rudder stock drops and produces a decided bang. It is not really a problem except that, this only usually happens when there is quite a lot else going on and in moments of duress. I for one, have long found it disconcerting. Being a saddo, I am quite pleased to have resolved it. A number of people at Looe mentioned they had the same trouble but I think only one, and I cannot recall who, maybe Tom Stewart, was able to tell me why. Anyway, bushes aside, the rudder bungee on 3698 is now maxed out.
