Topic : Boom pops off when gybing

Have a look at the socket in the boom that the gooseneck fits into. I vaguely recall that on my old NSM I had this problem especially when not much kicker on and found that the socket had got chewed up over the years. Replacing it did the trick.\r\n\r\nAlso check that you have the right gooseneck pin for the boom fitting. I do recall looking at one boat that had a square pin going into a round hole (or it could have been the other way around).

Steve\r\n\r\nJust be careful that you get the right shape fitting for your boom as there can be several all slightly different. Also be extravagant and fix a new pin on the gooseneck - the old one has probably worn with the slipping out.

Not guilty - no idea where you are but suggest that you go to a specialist dinghy chandler such as Pinnell & Bax. Before you ask I have no connection with them but always get good service and they support the class.

Take the boom with you so you get the right fitting. No idea what the expertise is like in the new shop as I always deal with Northampton.

"Just a thought, but with the boom in the centred position, sheeted in, does your mainsheet pull the boom forward into the mast, is it neutral or is it perhaps pulling the boom off the gooseneck - I had this pointed out to me recently - putting the mainsheet boom blocks above the hoop made a difference."

"I think if its not moving the hoop around the pulley must be in the right place - the outhaul must help keep our boom on too, as its strapped around the mast."

This may sound a bit basic but I have a problem with my boom popping off the gooseneck whenever I do all but the gentlest of gybes .. my solution so far has been to put a bungee cord around the mast but just wondered if this is a problem anyone else has encountered .. and hopefully solved !\r\n\r\nSteve

I have the pulley on the mast set directly above the hoop at the moment. I could move it but wouldnt that cause the hoop to try and bend when the main is under a lot of tension?

Kicker was something I was wondering about .. its not a loose footed sail as 3326 is an old NSM1 .. and the bottom of the luff is pinned onto the boom rather than onto the mast. But on a dead run or very broad reach in light winds I usually have very minimal kicker on anyway... this problem is occurring in winds of force 2/3.\r\n\r\nSteve

"Unfortunately I think Richard may well be spot on, as my gooseneck fitting is very loose. Its a square peg but the corners are so worn it would probably fit in a round hole.\r\n\r\nSo its off to the shops this weekend for me !!\r\n\r\nThanks everyone for your advice.\r\n\r\nSteve"

Some RS 200 sailors use a split pin vertically through the boom and gooseneck to stop it coming off ... I inherited this arrangement with my 200 and it worked well.

"Not enough kicker? If its a loose footed sail, is the tack of the sail tied to the mast?"

"Agree with Richard, had similar problems with an NSM, but more kicker and a new gooseneck fitting solved it."

Bolt rope not shrunk has it? Do you need to undo your stitching? Only relevant for older sails probably.
