Any idea what's happened to the vintage adjustments, the link from the PY page doesn't seem to be working...

Thanks,

Hi Richard, I think Ben Marshal has the latest figures.
He usually goes to all the DeMay events so I hope he will be at Upper Thames on Saturday.
Then we need to sort the link out ASAP

We are looking forward to it, Pat

Thanks, Pat.  I think he said he was coming when I saw him at Minima, but I just wanted to check the figures I've got are right, before he turns up.  Glad to hear you're coming too.

We have the DeMay at UTSC on Saturday - the link on the website is still not working so can anyone tell me where I can get the up-to-date handicaps?

 Thanks

Jeremy, Page 35 of the 2015 Year Book has the De May handicap for 2015 but not sure if this is current or not.

Start at 1000 and then alter as follows;

Cotton sails +40
Dacron Sails 0
Laminate sails -10
Medium spinnaker (pre-2003) 0
Large spinnaker (post 2003)-20
Wooden mast +10
Ali mast 0
Carbon mast -10
Ribbed boats +20
Beam below 5ft 8in 0
Beam 5ft 8in to 6ft 6in -10
Beam above 6ft 6in -20

Hi, I wasnt sure I should start a new subject regarding these handicaps, however it seems to me that the whole question of handicaps should be open for changes,

1/ Why should the qualification be 5 events when the Thames Series has 4,
2/ Why should the boats over 5 feet 8 inches be  -10 and wider boats -20,
3/Why should size of spinnakers be handicapped when we all use the larger sizes sailing against the more modern boats, and there are a lot of Demay Events where the last race changes ie at CRSC and UTSC.

Surely the whole series is to encourage all the older styles of merlins and now the numbers are reducing quickly, it is time for quick action, please can you also tell me why do some of the events have to clash with other merlin events ie salcombe week,

The handicaps, qualification and locations for De May certainly need reviewing as it has been possible to qualify without leaving the Thames which, for those of us living many miles from the Thames clubs, makes it an expensive campaign. I'd like to see a similar requirement basis to the silver tiller, having to complete different types of event to count e.g. two river, two lake etc.

As for spinnakers, many of us do still use small or medium size rather than the large modern ones and I'd also like to see a handicap advantage for not using quadrilateral sails - watching 1065 and 1066 sailing together last year, it was easy to see how much more sail area the modern quadrilateral sail has over the original rounded top that 1066 uses.

When I was on the committee I raised the point that the Silver Tiller can be won without visiting a river club which I personally think is wrong and unfair to those who are based on the river. Since clubs such as Hollingworth and Hamble also count as 'Restricted' there is no need to visit a river. This, in my view, does not constitute truelly restricted sailing and does nothing to support the origins of the class.

As for the vintage events, the number of events to count depends on the amount of events sailed. The Thames series is pretty restricted to the number of clubs but the DeMay can go anywhere really, hence the higher number of events to count.

Maybe it is time to look at all the series we have and make some adjustments. I always suggested we should have a 'River' Catagory in the Silver Tiller and maybe it is time to count 6 events not 5. There are more events now than there were 4/5 years ago.

It is important to support the river clubs more as the Thames Series and DeMay do but not in the numbers the Silver Tiller does. Wouldn't it be great to have a few Silver Tiller events that had to be counted and would be easier won in an older design??

Answers on a postcard!!

As for the final race at the Cookham DeMay open being different, this is up for debate next year as there wasactually only 1 modern boat joined in anyway!
