I had a Proctor 22'6" C section, hog stepped with diamonds and jumpers, alloy colour on a Martine which worked very well.  I rigged this in 1962 and it worked well on river and sea, and not very heavy but I did prefer my Holt wooden one.

Yes the fun of alloy. Great thing about carbon is you can just glue some track on. You could also glue on to ally using Plexus. We used to do that with the ally track on to a glass top of the alloy mast. The other problem is the half height measurement etc.

The alloy mast if a cat wing mast, would be far to heavy, probably 3 times the weight of a like for like mast if the standard Merlin one.

I had a hexagon with a 22'6 which was presumably it's original rig. It was a teardrop section proctor, probably a beta minus.

The boat originated at Tamworth SC so high aspect would make sense.

Dougal, there were a lot of 22'6" alloy rigs in the 60's usually rigged with swing spreaders and jumper struts at the top almost always Proctor C section though Passing Cloud had a John Powell mast (Provided by Jack Holt.) with just diamonds. That was as you surmise quite chuncky!

I am reminded that Crew Cut (John Oakley/Tony Fox.) moved from a wooden to a "C" section mast they tried a lower rig too but went back to the tall rig. They had the same rig on Crew Cut two as well.

Gents, pardon the pun, how about deck stepping a standard hog stepped mast using am M2 or M7

Way back in times of old..... did anyone try going to 22ft6" on an alloy mast? 

If not, was the problem the lack of availability of lighter alloy sections at that length, or the  extra weight aloft (or, I guess, the use of a heavier section on a longer mast really making the idea a non starter).

If the idea WAS tried - does anyone still have an alloy mast running to 22ft 6" that they'd wish to dispose off?

David. Indeed so - and I looked at an old C section, in gold - but it weighed a ton! I just don't think you can get one of the lighter sections in long enough lengths to go hog stepped and then up 22ft 6"!

Barnsie.... a nice idea BUT..... all the key factors, (where the luff groove starts being just one) are all wrong. The problem seems to be that by the time you've come up from the hog to the sheerline, then on up to the Black band, then gone 22ft 6", you'd want a longer than standard tube!

I've just been writing about Peter Scott's innovative idea with the prototype Thin Ice, 'A Wing and a Prayer' - using an alloy section from a catamaran - at 22ft 6" but...was it ever heavy!

So, am now looking for a 'long' alloy mast......

BTW Barnsie...am just about to start on the era of Moondance.......if you have any pictures that you can share, then yes please!

Moondance...... have you a 'killer' picture that can go into the book? I've got plenty of shots of the interior but - one of the boat doing what it did best would be great!

When Tony Rix first bought Mata Hari, he rigged it with a 22'.6" C section with just diamonds. As I recall, the diamond struts kept breaking which made looking at the rig quite interesting. The boat went very well and Tony and I had some good results. I think he had some rather good results at Hamble River although not with me!
