If you give me a call I will be able to help. I have restored a number of old Merlins to racing condition. Also if you could send some photos this would help 0208 991 5509

1759 is a Proctor designed 1Xc. She was built in 1965 by Chippendale at Fareham and finished probably by her first owner H W Tidbury of Hamble River SC. She was called 'Fast-Tiddy-Us'. The 1976 Year Book records the owner as M D Field also at HRSC. The 1980 Year Book says she was owned by D Nicholas across the river at Warsash SC. Later year books appear to show no further ownership information.

Hi George----I remember "Fast Tiddy Us" well. When I joined HRSC in 1977 Mike Field was racing her until he sold her and bought a Ghost Rider called "Old Scoots" FTS was pretty good in light conditions back then.Good luck with the restoration.

Hi all,
I have recently been given 1759 by my grandfather after she sat on his driveway for many years.
She is in need of a lot of work including revarnishing the hull. What's the best way to strip all the old varnish off without damaging the wood too much? I have tried paint stripper but it doesn't get it off? do I just have to sand it down by hand?
I don't know anything about her other than her sail number. Does anyone on here know anything?
Will put a picture up later if that helps?
Thanks,
George

Hi all,
Thanks for the replies!
I have tried to attach a photo of the boat to show how she looks now. Having restored a wooden wayfarer from a better condition than 1759 I have some experience of restoring wooden boats.
Obviously this one is going to need a full re-varnish - my main question is how do I remove all of the old without damaging the wood?

I suggest you read these two publications below. They are both excellent and filled with tons of useful information.

How to Build Glued-Lapstrake Wooden Boats by John Brooks & Ruth Ann Hill
Best wishes for the restoration

This was my fathers boat and occasionally I would crew.
