MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Pure Magic:A tricky question (for those with long memories!)

Here's the image. Looks like original artwork to me, not a font you could buy. Perhaps the work of a signwriter?

I remember it, and have quite a large number of fonts at work and with a graphic artist friend so may be able to help. Unfortunately, I can't find my old magazines; I'm sure I didn't junk them, but we have moved house 3X since then.

Can you scan an old title & mail it to me.

Somewhere in the depths of my wardrobe I still have a sweatshirt with that logo on! I think they were produced by a firm called Ocean World based on the Isle of Wight.

Can anyone out there help please? back in the 1980s, the Merlin Rocket mags and Year Book were instantly identifiable due to the use of a highly stylised script for the words Merlin Rocket, which were then superimposed onto the Class insignia. I've asked Nick Aubrey, who ran the magazine for a while and he's looking, in the meantime, can anyone else from back then throw any light on the font used.

The reason for asking? I'd like to use the same font in the artwork for Pure Magic.

As always, any help, in whatever for it may be, is great as it moves the project forwards.

Rod.... will do. i'll also email it to mags and ask him to put it up on the site!
Sadly, I'm not an artiste (except with a 4 letter word starting with P in front) but I did try a freehand version of how I thought that sort of font would look when forming the words 'Pure Magic' and it was just what I think the front cover would need.

Nearer the time I'm thinking of a 'competition' as to what the picture on the front cover should be!

Cheers

Rod and Jo....you should have an email at your .fr address. Mags, have sent it to you too, can you post it somewhere (maybe that needs a re-phrase!)

Worse... I think I remember you wearing it! I have a sneaky feeling that Dennis Fisher had one was well in the same bilious colour of one of his Merlins..... (at least yours was black!)

K.M - that's great detective work - thank you. I could see that working for the tagline '70 years of the Merlin Rocket. Thank you very much. D

Keiron..... again, thank you. My 'idea' (it is nice to have one now and then) was to have the logo and picture from two different eras from the class, just to stress that the book is not about the old boats, nor the new ones, but ALL of them!

No problem, still on the look out for a slightly softer version - its all before my time with the class but the original is great - a font full of character and a bit of fun, very much of its time. I'll update the forum if I find something closer.

The font is similar to the Rolling Stone magazine title, maybe based on it with an extra flourish or two... link below - Royal Acid Bath
