Topic : Scottish/Northern English Merlins - Marineblast Regatta 7-8th Sept

Hi all, just to say thanks for a great weekend at Cumbraes regatta and it was awesome to see 5 Merlins together - little acorns and all that. Well done to John and Andy (Hooton) for winning a ding-dong battle with Steve/Toby and Brian/Lorna, and for winning the fast handicap overall. Steve kindly said he will write a couple of paragraphs about the racing, so keep an eye out for a report.

Next up is Marineblast, link attached. At the moment it looks like Fran Gifford and Colin Brockbank will be bringing boats up, Brian will be there in his EZ Roller (which is immaculate btw), Angus will be there again in his NSM4 and we will be there in a hopefully re-rigged Smokers. I have almost firm commitments from 2 more Scottish boats. It's a brilliant venue and an exceptionally friendly club, so hopefully at least a couple more boats can make it! Everyone was stopping to stare at the Merlin line-up at Largs - best looking row of boats there in years, and lots of talk about rigging, hulls etc.

Cheers for now,

Andy

Trying to remember how the ferry from gourock goes, we are going across the holy water (the Clyde) on Friday

Also guess nobody k ows if when I'm picking up fran and tim from Glasgow airport are there height restrictions as towing double deck

The red ferries take trucks and buses so I don't think there would be a height restriction unless it is a condition of the price of the ticket.

Another boat coming. 2984 - what is she? Need to get our rigging sorted then we might give them some competition! Merlin results will be first over the line and first on handicap, 2 separate classifications unless anyone has a better idea

Not sure about airport height restrictions but whats the trailer height, much more than an suv? Would have thought what with tall airport shuttle buses and things you'd probably be ok, but can't guarantee it!

I mean buses which shuttle from the terminal to Glasgow :-P Let me know if getting to the shop that sells ferry tickets will be a problem btw and I'll see what I can do

Frans flight. Yes I'm towing her boat up and picking her up from airport. Gets in at 5 on the Friday. Just worried the shop will be closed. As by the time she has gone through customs and immigration controls guess it will be past 6 more like 7

Now looking like 7 boats, maybe 8. I just acquired a new boat which won't be there but the fleet is growing...

Colin,

Have the Scots imposed customs and immigration on flights from England already? It seems a bit like jumping the gun to me... More likely she will be delayed getting out of the airspace around London.

What a great place to sail! Thanks for a cracking weekend, a warm welcome and an introduction to that red death stuff - it's amazing! I hope we'll be back (in force) next time round. Cheers, Tim

Yep - thanks everyone, we loved it. I even got to work earlier from Glasgow this morning than I normally do from Putney. I might join Holy Loch SC for club racing.

Andy - thanks for motivating us to come up and see the Scottish merlins which are clearly having a growth phase.

We'll be back soon, hopefully with friends.

Fran

Yes Jez, Steppenwolf! Have plans for some mods and a shiny new paint job. Was great meeting all the southerners at what was a great regatta - here's the event report: http://www.caledoniasailing.com/merlin-rockets-at-marineblast-regatta

Hope to firm up next year's schedule for the Scottish boats soon, lots of enthusiasm going on!
