Who do people tend to use for boat insurance? Have had some quite high quotes of around £300. For a boat that is sub 1k.

Craftinsure all the way. I found them to be pretty competitive for price and very fast and efficient when I claimed for a broken mast last year.

James, I went down this path a couple of years ago all these top insurance people only seem to cater for boats worth thousands, in the end I opted for third party only, which was £27 at the time from insuremyboat.com some people will say its penny pinching but my boat was worth £800 on a good day and with second hand rigs cheap for older boats I thought it worth a gamble ( it was for me anyway).

Go to Gallagher Heath Liverpool 0151 227 4321 ask for Victoria, just sorted me for the third year.

And Good Service..

Bishop Skinner (Bluefin) as if you phone them, they will cater for non-carbonised and older Merlins. The online price is likely to be for a modern carbon one.

Agree with Pat 2121. Bishop Skinner handle the insurance of my restored 1969 Merlin. Latest premium £104 (paid yesterday!)

My third party only insurance is only £27.40,covering both merlins [ I argued that I could only sail one at a time], but it is in addition to my larger Boat [10m catamaran] Insurance, Fully Comp of £334 p.a.
20 years no claim however, and also covers me for RO duties.
With Haven.

And sails at £2k??

the boat is worth £3k really, regardless of whats spent on it that's your market value. Newer boats in good condition are selling for less at the moment e.g. 3517 which had decent, newish kit on it.

It doesn't seem right when you put so much work in, but at the end of the day the most anything is worth is what someone will pay for it.

How much do you insure for though???

My boat is 1992, soon to be perfectly restored. Carbon rig £3000 including boom and poles, sails £2000 more, rigging would cost £3500 at retail, foils £1200 and the hull would cost upward of £2500 to replace like for like.

I wouldn't be able to sell my boat for £9000 though.

So how do we judge the value...???

Rigging I just worked out the speck for a new hull, all the rope, mast, boom and hull fittings at RRP came to over £5k. Therefor £3k is very conservative.

New top of the line Sails will be near enough £2k

Cheers Chris M and D.h.

That is kinda how I figured. There is a difference between market value and the actual value of replacement and we have to insure at a value of compromise between the two..?

Just had some quotes from Bishop Skinner et al that were more than my car insurance, between £200 and £300

Then I tried http://www.insurance4dinghies.com/ same cover £85

Bit of a difference.

We have used www.craftinsure.com for many years. Always been very competitive and good to deal with. PLUS - they are again sponsoring the Merlin Rocket Class in a big way this year, so we should make sure we use them if it makes sense.
