Hi all, I am heading to a close on this years yearbook and I am missing a couple of things. |
Hi Jez - I believe team winners were Blithfield (Taxi, Biggs, Potts) |
Thanks Tim. Clean sweep of the Team Trophies then for Blithfield. Nationals, Inlands and Salcombe! |
Perry pot was this Harriet Salmon |
Can we have the Class Rules reinstated? That would be useful. |
Rich, the Rules were removed quite simply because they were not aligned with the ones on the RYA web site (the later being the "legally binding" ones). Funnily enough, the yearbook was more up to date as the RYA had not updated theirs after years of AGMs. http://www.rya.org.uk/racing/equipmentclasses/nationalclasses/Pages/merlin-redwing.aspx |
Still nice to have them in the Yearbook, especially if the version on the RYA site is out of date. And of course if they are in the Yearbook one won't need an iPad to read them in the boat park (or workshop). |
2nd January 2013 rules on the RYA web site. These will be the ones in play for this season. Print out a copy and would too can have one in your (or JTs) workshop. |
I'm having trouble keeping up with the changes of URL for the MR rules. Thanks for updating us Andy. However, it looks like the 2013 rules are already out of date: see the very last paragraph, which refers to membership stickers. |
I also noted something in there in red text about new boats built after 01/01/2013 and official RYA plaques - not something that concerns me at the moment, but I cannot remember this appearing in the AGM and being voted upon. |
The building plaque is usual in other classes as are purchased sail labels, -sole purpose revenue generation- since scrutineers rarely look at them! I guess the all powerful RYA slipped this in? It would have been good form to let people know, even if there was no vote at class level. It puts amateur builders on the spot though, will their build need to be supervised by a measurer at every stage to be eligible for the plaque? |
No problem Andy, this is exactly why the rules are no longer in the yearbook as by the time I go to print they are out of date again! there is a link on the home page to them though. |
Jez - the web link goes to the 2011 Rules, so that is out of date too!! Can you give Mags another nudge? |
Re Class Rules – I see the 2013 addendum (18 b ii) reads: |
I would also be interested to see whether the RYA can stick their plaque on the old Wembley One Designs - they had a transom, but it was entirely within the aft buoyancy tank! |
As an example of tautology, surely it's not possible to affix a plaque *above* the sheerline? |
Keith - since the first paragraph of the Rules states that anything within square brackets is a "note" and does not form part of the Class Rules, the requirement to affix a membership sticker to the boat certificate was never actually a requirement. So, the MROA's decision to stop sending out stickers shouldn't affect anything. |
You either are an RYA National Class and the RYA owns your rules and can do to them whatever they like (the purpose of an AGM is so that a National Class can tell the RYA what its members want, but the RYA do not have to listen.) |
Presumably the MROA can vote to opt out of RYA control at any time. But would we get the right to the trade mark name 'Merlin Rocket' which the RYA seems to have grabbed? |
We have been round this buoy. I think we agreed at a recent AGM to remain with the RYA as the advantages outweighed the disadvantages. |
It is interesting how these issues come around and around. I'm now up to the 'early 80s' with Pure magic, the new book on the class, by coincidence I was reading the AGM reports from 81/82 when the discussion on leaving the RYA was a 'hot' topic. The Firely Class had recently gone 'independant' which lead to quite a groundswell of thinking that the MR should follow suit. That was more than 30 years ago!" |
It is almost tradition that every Chairman has a 'rules' moment during their tenure - my moment revolved around the sheathing of new hulls in glass fibre (shows me age - there were wooden boats then!)It was very helpful to have the RYA input in resolving the issue. Given the transient nature of Committee's, having a fixed point ofhelp to turn to is no bad thing. |
These are wise words Mr Scott - but are we sure the RYA staff have as much commitment to the tradition and principles behind the class as we do? |
Good point - well made! The reality is that ,as the Class evolves, this area needs to be kept under review - what was 'right' back then might not be 'right' now. |
Surely the building fee is payable to the designer, not the RYA? |
No, that's the Royalty, the building fee is the RYA tax. |
