The original Osprey was built by Jack Chippendale I think in 1953 in exactly the same way as the Merlin Rockets of the time with ribs and solid wooden planks. Ian Proctor, Cliff Norbury and John Oakley won the huge Round the Isle of Wight Race for dinghies in 1953.

The following weekend I crewed David Mayne from Minima Y.C. in his at a Nat 12 meeting at Hamble. After the Saturday race top sailor Richard Creagh Osborne asked if anyone wanted to sail Osprey with him. David and I were the first to jump up so we joined Richard for an amazing hour or so of very fast sailing in this exiting boat. None of us had trapezed before, with the wind was probably around force 3-4 it was a fantastic experience.
