Topic : Doom Bar

A very fine Cornish Ale to which I have taken rather a liking, it beats Newquay Steam ale and Tinners out of sight, that horrible brew under the green Deveonish Label could never compete even if they still waste hops brewing it!
One Question though?
Why is it cheaper in a rural village pub in Central England than it is in Salcombe Yacth Club????

Mind you even though it had travelled 200 miles or so it still tasted mighty fine!

Doom Bar gets everywhere these days which is great. The Sharps brewery's website is interesting, you have to enter your age into it before it opens up.

Time to stop drinking Doom Bar as Sharps has been bought by the Molson Coors Brewing Company for £17 million. That is why you see it everywhere now.

Non of which explains why it is more expensive in the Salcombe Yacht Club bar perhaps that is because they have overheads like any bar, but do not sell as much in the ordinary way as a say a pub might, though with Merlins in town.............

might it be
a)just because they can
b)because their clientele don't mind paying a bit more
c)theres less competition for customers and pumps on the bar in the yacht club

or maybe a mix of all three?

as far as I can remember, bar prices in the Yacht Club are generally cheaper than the rest of the towns watering holes. Don't forget the Salcombe Tax!

A guest beer over this side. It has to compete with Adnams, Mauldons and Maldons +++. Tough choices come Friday night.

There are many things you can do in Salcombe - saving money is not one of them!

I understand that there is actually a "Doom Bar?" I.E. An entry to the harbour? As in the Salcombe or Hayling Island Bar that I have sailed across on occasions - Although have to admit to visiting the Yacht club bars prob more often??

Yes the Doom Bar is the entrance point to Rock bay/harbour.

Might have been named Doom Bar after a Kestrel Nationals there in the late 1980's I witnessed!
They had sailed outside the Camel estuary to make up for lost races then sailed in at low water not knowing the channel was by the rocks on one side. I beleive there were about 12 broken masts in the breaking surf and the rescue boat dory turned over and lost its fuel tank! I remember Proctors driving down with a full trailer of masts and getting nearly everyone back out next day
