Topic : Newbie 2506 history and advice needed please.

Hi, just wondering if there is any history surrounding this boat. It was built by Wyche and Coppock in the early 70s and I think its a Nokes Moon Rocket number 2506 but not too sure. I have taken her out quite a few times and she is quick in light winds and accelerates well. Unfortunately, she is also slow in the tack, any advice out there to help her turn more quickly much appreciated. Thanks

If she is 2506 she was originally called 'Dishy'. She is a Moon Rocket designed by Mike Nokes and was probably built in 1971 by Wyche and Coppock in Nottingham.
The 1972 year book records her owner as H Griggs of Chase SC.
The 1982 yb shows a new owner D Hibbard also at Chase SC.
The next change recorded in the year books was in 1995 when the owner was J F Pardoe again at Chase SC.

The later year books show no further ownership information so she seems to have been a one club boat for at least 25 years!

Andy,

The first thing that you need to ensure to speed up the tack is that your crew keeps the jib sheeted in on the old side until you are past head to wind, this will help the nose round. Also it may pay you to free off slightly before the tack to accelerate the boat into the tack.

Getting some good practice in roll tacking will help you recover some of the speed lost in the tack, as well as sorting out the top batten. If you have a few practice beats where you tack as soon as you feel the boat is back to speed before the next tack then you should find that the distance between the tacks reduces quite considerably as your technique improves.

Thanks everyone, I got the boat from JF Pardon and she is still named Dishy. She is in remarkable condition for her age. She could probably do with some new sails, her current ones are circa 1982 vintage. She is being sailed at Thornton Steward in N York now.

Ref tacking, went out tonight in light winds and roll tacking made a huge difference, thanks again.
