MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Compilation of boat data/history and current status.

Hi to all! I did have a search of the forum for anything similar to this but drew a blank so apologies if this has already been coverd.
I was wondering if it would be possible to add some boat data to this site, maybe containing current location and status ect along with some history that previous owners could add to. I am currently reviving "Chilled Wine" which I belive to be a 1982 boat of summer wine design and we also have "Canibal" which I think may have been a '67 boat but I know nothing really of this one. It would be great if there was a place where this information could be kept and added to.... any ideas?

There's a lot of this info in the annual yearbook.

'Cannibal' (Spelt with 2 nns) was the name given to 1707. She is a Proctor Mk 1X built by Chippendale in 1964 and completed by her first owner who was A R Axford of Bolton SC.

3277 'Chilled Wine' is a Phil Morrison designed Summer Wine. She was probably built in 1982 by her first owner. The 1983 MROA year Book shows her name as 'Et Tu' but does not record the name of the owner.
By 1984 her name had been changed to 'Permanent Waves' and her owner was M. Bees of Brightlingsea SC.
The 1987 year book records the name changed to 'Chilled Wine' and her new owner as B. Bridge at Leigh and Lowton SC.

The national 12 site has a very good example of this sort of archive, it takes what is in the year books a good step beyond.

Great to hear that 3277 is still alive. The yearbook is correct, she was a home-build and I bought her from the owner/builder (in Portsmouth) in early 1983, I'm afraid I can't remember his name. Happy memories of a very hot & sunny Nationals @ Whistable that year.

The Larks have also been compiling an online searchable register with room for additional narrative. If we did one it could be restricted to members only in the same way as the yearbook as much of the info on names and locations is personal. It could even replace the yearbook and cut costs although they are nice to have in print.

Thanks for your replies reguarding the history of my boats. 1707 "Cannibal" is currently being sailed by my Dad at Budworth Mere in Cheshire, it is the only Merlin there though so no racing.

Thanks again for your reply Mike, Yes 3277 is still alive. I aquired the boat around three years ago. She had been sanded down and dry stored for seven years so with a small amount of sanding and much varnishing she was back on the water at Leigh and Lowton SC. Unfortunately within a couple of months some kind of fungus grew right through the new varnish. :-( So three years(ish) later she has made it out of the garage for another revival. The gunwhales have rotted away and are currently being replaced although I am struggling to bend the lovely piece of maple to the desired shape. I'll keep at it though and with any luck she will be back on the water for the summer!
