MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Merlin sailing in the BVI?

I know quite a few of Merlin Rocketeers have sailed in the BVI. 15 - 18 knots everyday and warm spray over the shorts and tee shirts. Brother Ron is doing a load of work on possibly relocating the Royal BVI Yacht Club to Nanny Cay - a perfect place to sail - off the sandy beach straight into Sir Francis Drake Sound. And Peg Legs Landing is a great restaurant and bar right in the middle of the Marina area, many a happy hour has been spent there. So we were musing last night at Thames Sailing Club whether it might be possible to have a MR regatta there - We could also organise some IC 24 racing, the boats that Stuart and Christian were sailing. There is no doubt it would not be cheap and it would only be worth going for say 2 weeks - With the sad passing on of dear old Patrick King reminds us thatall our days are numbered, so why not spend the kids inheritance now. I reckon we could get 12MR's in a container with trollies and a couple of trailers to get the boats from Road Town down to Nanny Cay. (about 3 miles) First thought was to integrate into the Spring Regatta but flights are almost impossible and accomodation difficult and expensive. But if we went out of season it would be a lot easier. I am sure that organising the racing and safety would be easy. The RBVIYC would love it.
In a small Island everyone knows everyone including the shippers - Ron reckons he could get a couple of extra containers on a ship quite cheaply and most containers return to UK empty, so we would get our boats back. Am I just dreaming, or would there be any takers - we would have to start organising now for say late 2011 - Anyone interested?

I'm not sure about 12 MRs in a container. The Musto Skiff lot struggled to get 14 of their tiny flat craft in a container.

A lovely idea though, for those of you with oodles of spare cash!

I shall cancel Salcombe for 2011 and go with your plans, Stuart. Which design do you think suitable for turquise water and 87 degrees?

how about moving the vintage series there, I think we would all be up for that, and as most of you have 2 or more boats it would be better than south devon

Why not send a few out on a one way trip and build up a local fleet and then have an annual event draw lots for the boats.

Re Mag's comment - pretty much the same way we got 5 Toppers in the back of Justin Dunn's Transit for Junior Bourne End Week this year courtesy of Thames SC??

... and three Picos.

Can't remember if this was before or just after he had his exhaust stolen while parked outside his house!
