Topic : Reaching Hook 'Buttons'

I've realised that we must change the reaching hooks on 'Armed Forces' to the buttons that most other people use.
Where exactly should they be postioned relative to the shroud?
A few inches forward?
If they are screwed to the gunwhale where it's about 30degrees off the vertical will that be OK?
Are there any subleties I should know about?
Thanks in advance,
Chris Iles

Hi Chris,

If you are going to use these 'buttons', I would advocate bolting them on - they take a bit of abuse!

GGGGG

Just aft of the shroud, not far enough back for the crew to sit on them. Through bolt with countersunk machine screw and nyloc nut into the meaty part of the angled gunwhale, make sure you put some epoxy or varnish down the hole to seal it and back both ends of the machine screw with a washer to spread the load.

The gucci solution, as fitted by Kev Driver on Business as Usual, is to land the mushroom on a stainless steel ferule (to get the height right) and then bolt through a mahogany slug epoxied into the sycamore gunwale (better compression resistance). Big penny washer on the back, which is landed on a "plinth" of epoxy to spread the load.

These are the little beasties you need,
along with M4x50 countersunk machine screws, M4 nylock nut, M4x25 repair (penny) washer

total cost of parts both side £2.00

I don't think I'm going to get rich selling this stuff :-)
