Topic : Wembley Merlin Rocket Training 18th Sept

Hi All,
Wembley have arranged for a training day on the Saturday before the Silver Tiller.
Multiple Champions Pat and Jilly Blake will be running the training course with me poodling about in assistance.

Pat will be putting together a programme for the day in due course. But whatever the content you are bound to learn something useful.

The event is heavily subsidised by Wembley SC and for a small sum you get combined entry to the training and the ST.

Hi,
We are intending to bring 'Armed Forces' for the training and open.
Do we need to pre-book for the training?
What time does it start?
Is there a particular focus to the training?
Looking forwards to it,
Chris and Kathy Iles 3442.

Hi Chris and Kathy
Great to have you with us. You don't need to pre-book, just turn up on the day. We are aiming to be rigged and ready to go for about 10am. Just drive along Birchen Grove to near the end of the road and you'll see the club on the right hand side. Unhook and you can wheel your boat in, then we park our cars in the public car park (free) around the back. I'll be there on Saturday from about 8.15- 8.30 to open up etc

Pat and Steve are working on a proposed training programme which they'll post soon

Cheers, Paul

We see the day going like this:

Jilly and I intend to concentrate on the techniques that we think are most important for that day (heavy weather, light weather, wind shifts, etc) and what we think will be needed for the following days Silver Tiller Event.
We will definitely discus and practice:
Crewing - spinnaker trim and hoist, drop and gybe - balance -
Starting - including where to start and how to get there
Helm/Crew relationships and who does what
Choosing the best way around the course
Mark rounding, tacking and gybing
and, of course, goal setting - our goal is to get you higher up the pecking order and point you towards further improvements in the future

Start at 10am - preferably with boats rigged.

Coffee with briefing and introductions with an outline of the days activities.
We will ask all trainees what they feel they most need to improve, so we can concentrate on those issues.
We will give a short talk on the techniques that we are expecting to practice - so we all know the theory of what to do before we go and put it into practice. We intend to make this as short and concise as possible so we can revisit anyone's particular needs later in the day

On the water about 11.

We will set a triangle course, using either Welsh Harp marks or we can lay marks (or a combination of the two)
We will start by asking everyone to sail round the course, not racing but demonstrating their best boat handling techniques so we can observe, comment and hopefully video each boat - I expect this to take about half an hour.
Then we will go into series of short races to practice starting and all the other boat handling techniques

Back ashore about 12.45 for a 'working lunch' to talk over what we have learnt and what we need to concentrate on in the afternoon and view some video of the morning session

Back on the water at about 2.15pm to do some more training and end up with one proper race to put into practice what we have learnt

Back ashore about 4.30 for a debrief and review of video etc. Formal proceedings should be finished by by about 5.30 and trainers will available for informal discussion until about 6.00 pm - ready for an early night before the big day on Sunday!

Cheers

Pat

Is lunch available at the club or should we bring our own?

Thanks in advance to all those involved in organising this, it makes a huge difference to get this kind of support.
Chris
