Not sure, how many people knew Phil, but this post has been released by WOBYC yesterday:-
"The Waveney and Oulton Broad Yacht Club suffered two loses with the death of two Commodores within a week. On Saturday the sad news was that Fred Bowles who had done two stints as Commodore a few years ago, had died earlier in the week. Fred crewed for Selwyn Watson in Waveney No 8 Thalia and when Selwyn died Fred with son Neil bought Thalia and turned it into one of the most successful boats on the Broad and when Fred retired from sailing Neil’s wife Dee took over at the front and they became even more successful. Fred maintained his interest in sailing but over the last few years had not been seen very much at the Club. He had been unwell in recent years and died within a short time of finally moving into a nursing home. Gorleston Crematorium was packed for his funeral last Tuesday. On Sunday morning the shock was even greater to find that racing had been cancelled out of respect for Phil Plant, the current Commodore who had been at the Club on Saturday afternoon and died suddenly at home during the evening. Phil was one of the most enthusiastic Commodores the Club has had and was in the middle of his second successive year having served his first year five years ago and he was looking forward to Oulton Week in a months time. He had taken up racing not many years ago and started in a Merlin/Rocket and then, as many Merlin owners have done, moved into the Squibs. He spent a lot of time working on his boat and had got it looking good and thoroughly enjoyed his sailing. He will be sadly missed and condolences go to his wife Dee and family."
It will be a very sombre Oulton Week this year, but in their memory, they deserve a good turnout..
