Where are the daily results ?
Was there any sailing yesterday?

There was some sailing. I saw the first start before I left to return to London. In quite a fresh breeze, there were a few capisizes. The first start was away without a black flag, thought there was an individual recall. Not sure who. David Winder was leading towards the Bag under spinnaker. I did see Wicked though Rob!

Be good to have a report on Laurie & Jilly's thoughts on how Wicked handles after the week if possible?!

Posted: 05/07/2010 14:36:59
By: Interested...
Rob et al, I've been like an expectant father, waiting for Wicked's first result with Laurie sailing her. Jilly persuaded him to come out of retirement (in spite of his bad back), and they managed an 11th place in 22 knots of wind. Not bad for the old man, and well done Jill for getting him round the course. (they weigh about 18 stones all up).
With the wind expected to be lighter for the rest of the week, I expect them to improve their placing. (I say this because I know Laurie sails better when under pressure!)

SYC have cunningly changed the link for the results. Day 2 results are now posted.

Am keeping an eye on Wicked. Will be interesting if thet can get some top 10 results. Maybe the new design in wood is very competitive and may be tempted to get one.

Having been alongside Wicked this afternoon, I can confirm she has a very impressive turn of speed, especially on a two sail reach, maybe that's due to Lawrie & Jily being flyweights.

Conditions today were incredible - someone said to me that is was "just like Salcombe", holes, wind doing somersaults. Yes, spinnakers were up in boat directions even had a downwind start too. Every point of sailing on most legs, crazy. Still the good guys won but there were tooth & nail battles throughout the fleet.

I hope all were happy with the shortened course as it was ideally a bit too short at 1 hour 20 or so. I was wary of the tide and the likelihood the wind could disappear completely. It was very patchy and North Westerly is our worst direction for sailing between the ferry and Blackstone, which is why I kept you up the Bag and used X.

I would add to that I went for the northerly start to help you hold the line using the ebb tide. It can appear almost like a downwind start at times but once you reach the Ferry it becomes a reach. At least we avoided any general recalls.

Keith,

John, thanks for posting the results so promptly - we camp followers are hungry for news. And thanks to Andy and Bob for giving us some excellent feedback about the sailing conditions. I'll be down tomorrow to take a look for myself. Until then, enjoy your sailing!

Surely Salcombe at it's best on Tuesday pm? Good breeze without being too much for anyone. Sun, fullish tide , not too strong and good racing. The first pm black flag though, several becoming too keen and pushing others over, worsened by the ebb tide. Nice clean start second time though.

Si & Felix got another bullet in the morning, with Rich Adams leading in the afternoon when I left the club as the fleet headed off through the Bag to buoy 7. Matt Biggs & Willie Warren were chasing, with Tom Stewart some way back.

Si Blakio's looking on top form, but not over yet.

Keith Callaghan was here today to check over Lawrie's progress in your boat Rob. She has been in the mix.

No it's just not updated, nor are you the missing link! These things usualy slow up after the initial enthusiasm,it's a long week ashore as well as afloat, and of course there may be unresolved protests Black Flag Issues etc.

Protests pending for this morning's race. As the race finished, Dan took the bullet from Lawrie, Biggsy in third. There may be a case for redress in the way the race was shortened, but the protest is not being heard until 7pm tonight. Is Si Blake starting to tense up?

PM race was led by Steve Goacher, with Tom and Willie chasing. Think Tom was leading before I left for the day.

Wind shifty, occasionally drifting this morning, but more brezze in the pm race. Sunburnt noses and lots of tacking practice for some.

I left Salcombe on Thursday afternoon. Matt Biggs was intending to protest about the shortened course that morning. Did go ahead with it? The results are published with no mention of the protest so I assume it was dismissed if he did. Is that so?

By: Robert Harris
Yes Matt did seek redress but his appeal was unsucessful, but I know no details. Amusingly Jennie and I had not heard the shortened signal and even when we rounded the Ferry steps (having tacked up through the Batson moorings) we were not sure the flag we could see flapping was an "S". Once this was confirmed and knowing Matt was making slow progress on the Portlemouth shore we became very excited, focusing hard to avoid making a mistake and to keep the flying "Wicked" behind us. Wooden boats 1 and 2!

Some of the oldies thought it would be very interesting and possibly educational to go back to having the week on a spring tide. The problem with neaps is that some boats are getting away with manouvers that would be a horrendous error under stonger tides, back eddies were virtually non-existent and local knowledge gleaned over many years is negated.
I would guess that 10th - 15th is neaps again ?
Might be fun and after all Salcombe week should be an apprenticeship of many many years.......

How long does one have to sail at Salcombe to be an oldie? Not looking in the mirror here, but Si Blakio thought he had been sailing there for 30 years ...

Anyhow, looks like I managed to convince the missus (non sailing this year and hence really grumpy) that we should come back next year. She agreed, hurrah.

I think what Simon was trying to explain at the prizegiving - before his Mother interjected - was that he has been going to Salcombe Merlin Week for 30 years, as Jilly was pregnant for his first visit!
Something to aspire to for all those girls and boys on the beach.

The aspire bit for the girls and boys. Which aspect, the going to salcombe for 30 years, or the getting pregnant, and did you mean on the beach !!!!!!

Well I meant winning - but I guess it is all pretty good really.

I don't think you should put it down because there are loads of young people in our class who are growing up with sailing in their blood, and the fact that many go on to be keen sailors is to their benefit and ours.

To win Salcombe Week is a wonderful achievement - so well done Simon. Pat and Jilly should feel, rightfully, proud. They have been able to pass on their knowledge, experiemce and skill to Simon - all I was able to pass on was where the best pubs were!! Well done!!

Just a thought! Was Simon sailing with any one?
Dose the front-end bloke/blokes exist?

Yes well done Simon....
After all boats sailed from Batson should not be allowed to win the week, never have yet.....

I believe it was the class chairman no less in the front of his boat.

I'm glad they chose last week for Salcombe. I'm not sure the missis would have been interested in going next year if the weather had been as this weeks is. Well done in moving it a week early.
