Topic : Does anyone know the whereabouts of Gigolo?

Many moons ago, I was lucky enough to own Gigolo, an Outrage design(2222. It was sold to Jim Park at Wembley and I haven't heard hide nor hair of Gigolo since. For river sailing, it is a tremendous design but I haven't seen any examples of the design up for sale. I know 2157 rotted away in the Upper Thames Car Park but if anyone knows or the whereabouts of Gigolo or one of her sisterships such as Kraken, Mousetrap or Outrage, please can you let me know.
Many thanks,

Chris

Chris,

that is truly an amazing co-incidence!! Just today I fired off some enquiries about.... 2222, Gigolo! Last time I heard of her, the boat had been painted a billious yellow!

As far as I know, there are a couple of Courageous boats still around (Parkstone used to have one, there was also one up on the Thames).

I think the records show that there were only 6 Outrages ever built, of which Gigolo was the most famous. One of these would really be worth saving - but where are they now?

2444, a Courageous, is still going strong and sailing regularly at Ranelagh (John Stokes boat from new I believe). Haven't seen an Outrage ever anywhere.

Gigolo was owned by Graham Pike and Patrick King of Hamble River Sailing Club and I bought her from them after the very windy Championships at Pwellheli in 1970. She was a pretty boat to look at, painted with Crown Jasmine Yellow (!) and with the waterline in black and the bottom beautifully varnished. After Jim sold her within Wembley (I think), I never saw her again and suspect that she went to the big boatyard in the sky.

I am sure that Gigolo appeared on ebay about 14-18 months ago and looked in a pretty sorry state! Paint & varnish peeling and sitting in what looked like a field! Not sure if there is any way of being able to trawl through completed listings on ebay that far back?

I keep a copy of many of the photos, but I haven't got 2222, sorry.

I had one of the Outrages 2191 a very pretty boat that was written off at gybe mark in the last race of the Whitstable champs . The oldest boat entered tried to mate and put hole in the side that my kids could crawl through .

Spud's brother Brian got it back on the water again and sailed it for many years .

Many thanks,

I don't know if this helps but I believe there were 8 boats built by Rowsells to the Outrage design.
They were:
2157 Rave, 2186 Kraken, 2191 Mousetrap, 2204 Outrage, 2222 Gigolo, 2266 Exe'quisite (renamed Bobabout), 2291 Outrageous, 2439 Conchise.
From the old year books I might be able to tell at which club they were last recorded if you would like me to do the research.

Kraken used to be owned by Tony Cook who sailed at Aldenham ... but that was 30 years ago!

I remember Bob About being at Cookham for some years and I have a feeling the guy who had it might still have it sitting in his garage. He is no longer a member but it was in good nick and it can't be much more than 15 years ago. I will see what I can find out.

Chris,

I drew a blank around these parts (Hamble and Solent area) and believe me, I was on a 'search mission' when I was looking!

I did hear of a boat sailing down at Parkstone but this was believed to be a newer boat - though again, details are sketchy.

Does anyone know if Tom Booth is still 'with us' - I'm sure that if so, he may have some pictures!

Having listened to the Archers recently there are two Outrages at Brookfield trying to get their own back at a Gigolo who has claimed their young daughters maidenhead! Phew, these countryfolk. I am sure glad I am a townie.

Chris,

I was just reminding myself of the lines of 2222 by looking at the pic in the MR book (Page 67). As it is a Pat Blake shot I am hopeful that he might have some more!

Ah yes, she looked very sleek in that photo. I was sailing that day with Pat Blake's (then) girlfriend, Caroline Pawley and Pat was taking pictures from the bank. Although the picture doesn't really reflect it, it was blowing pretty hard that day and I understand that Mike McNamara used the photo in his lectures to show that boats needed to be bolt upright to go fast...........!!
As I recall, all the Outrages were of a slightly different width. Gigolo was 5 ft 11", I think Kraken was about 6ft and I think Outrage was about 6ft 3" (but don't take that as gospel!)
Good luck in finding one- I hope we are both successful.

Chris,

in my case it is more of a 'watching brief' - though with the understanding that with each repair, 3025 becomes more epoxy and less woodword so at some point in the future will need replacement! Along with supercrew Job, we'd both like to find 3199 Credit card, last heard of at Island Barn, but in parallel have an active watch for any of the following.....

Outrage
Courageous
Superscoter
Rigadoon
Sugar Plum

Funnily eough, a superscoter came up on ebay 2, maybe 3 years ago, but the bidding for it was fierce and it went for big bucks. I've not heard of the boat since, would have thought that it might have reappeared on the classic circuit somewheer!

Anyone seen my old Sugar Plum, 1890, Dai Bach?

Hmmm! Quite a list there. Acapulco (Courageous-2347)is no more and not sure of the fate of Courageous (2350). If you contact David Bland of Wembley, he might know of the whereabouts of a Superscotor as he used to own one-there was a rumour that a bare hull was sitting in the rafters of Richard Debenham's yard. Rigadoon was at Upper Thames a few years ago-I'll ask around and see where it went. Not sure about any Suger Plums-try Ranelagh-there may be one or two there in the boat shed!!

Sadly Richard Debenham is no longer with us, and when I last saw him about 4 years ago he had long given up his premises and was the personal boatman to Peter Colby. Wasn't Super Scoter Nick Truman's take (1751.) on a flared Surf Scoter, I am certain there is nothing in what was A D Trumans yard either. Brian Howard at WOBYC might know

Owned 1865 Chi-Chi an Anderson, Rigden & Perkins built Sugar Plum (ex Owen Clark) in the 70's. Beautiful varnished boat, very fast offwind but rather "tippy". Sold late 70's to couple from Hampton area.

Mike,

Agree about the wilful tippiness of the Sugar Plum. There was one I crewed in at Netley, then went on to sail in a XII and found that far less rocky downwind (and let's face it the XII wasn't always the most stable of platforms). If the Sugar Plum was considered a handful inland it could explain why we spent a lot of time swimming when sailing the boat (badly) in estuary conditions
