Pete

I measured our mast (SuperSpar) before it went and that was as per the guide i.e. 700mm/135mm

That was with P&B sails.

Hi, thanks for your replys been very helpful and learnt alot to set the boat up. Think now its just a case of getting out sailing and getting some refernces on the mast and marking with a pen whats comfy and where the hook is in relation to different wind strengths to how powered or depowered boat is.
Thanks again

Thats the easy bit!

>> getting some references on the mast
Still easy...

>>whats comfy and where the hook is in relation to different wind strengths to how powered or depowered boat is.
Now you are talking! Don't forget the rig tension, and the lowers tension, and the kicker, and the cunningham, and the outhaul, and the jib sheeting angle, and the jib sheet tension, and the toe-strap positions, and whether its flat water or not... and its different in every wind strength... and you will soon see why people are still sailing / learning the Merlin after 20 or 30 years!

Sure there is alot to think about with the rig in varible conditions although for now i think its the start of the learning curve and keeping things simpler. Looking forward to the sailing season oh yeah and hopefuly warmer weather!

When we bougt BAU from Glen, I asked "what settings to use?". The reply was elegant in its simplicity ... pull the mast forward (jib block to block, tension the shrouds to keep the leeward one tight and go sailing. If you feel that you are overpowered, ease off the jib halyard (or pull back on the one string if you are so blessed), until control is restored. No marks on any control line.

Then again, Glen had had two years in the boat and is a pretty special yotter ...
