Are the Mk1 Winders thought to be faster than a wooden Turner Tales? Or is it naive to ask?

All depends... on the condition.

An un-looked after epoxy Winder will be better / quicker / easier to sail than an un-looked after wooden boat. The Winder Mk 1 is a different shape than the Canterbury Tales (centreboard moved forward a little), but its so subtle as to make no difference.

But the main controlling influence will be the weight of the hull and where that weight is, the state of the mast / sails / spinnaker / control lines / foils etc. Some of the early Winders were "fitted out to a price", compared with someone's pride and joy wooden boat that might have been "fitted out regardless of price".

Are Winder 1s quicker?

Well given that the youngest of the JT woodies is now 19 years old, and they were all sailed pretty hard i'd take it as a given that a Winder, built out of superior materials will be both significantly stiffer and offer better accelleration than a wooden boat.

However they must be pointed in right direction!

The JT boats make excellent club boats, and on their day will turn heads at opens. But as I said in the other thread I think their days of consistant success on the circuit are behind them.
