Topic : America's Cup

Read about it. It's becoming ever more farcical. The first race was postponed on Monday because of no wind and again yesterday by big waves. Next attempt on Friday, maybe. What a shame. The last one was such a great spectacle on Sky, will we ever get it back?

An addendum to the above. Sky scheduled a report on the the America's Cup this morning. They didn't bother and who can blame them?

The waves were only 1.5 metres (4' in old money.)we had bigger at Pwhelli in 1970! Does America's Cup have any reasojn to be called sailing any more? Does it have any relavence to our sport at all? Rebert is right who can blame Sky?

Its rubbish. I can't beleive you can spent that much money on a boat that can't sail in even marginal conditions!!

Next thing they will cancel Friday due to the water being to wet!!

I have been recording the morning coverage on Sky and they are having to substitute it with skiing every day. Not fair on them or those of us excited about watching some racing!!

Oracle is flying in this race. Seems to have the boat speed at present!!

Shall be interesting to see what happens downwind though. Also both boats are optimised for certian conditions. Interesting how BMWO furled the jib to give better pressure over the wing to enable her to climb a couple more degrees to windward. Can we see one on the MR soon!!!

Very impressive that both are footing at similar speeds but its the angle of attack that may sink the Swiss. Bring it on.

While I think that the technology is fantastic it seems that it is all down to boat speed and there seems little to do with tactics. Is it just me or is the weekly race at my home club more exciting?

BMWO is going away form them downwind as well. Alinghi's heart has been broken, especially if they have the same conditions for one of the next 2 races. Now 3.5 km ahead. Harks back to the last mismatch. Roll on the return of lead mines!!!!

It is all a bit of a Doctor Johnson's dog isn't it.

Also watching both boats, and having sailed high performance cats extensively over the years, cannot help observing that Alinghi's handling on the helm downwind is a little agressive and not as smooth as BMWO. To get the best out of wild thinging it (Aussies started it in 1990), you have to be smooth and glide the boat and keep the resistance to apparent wind at a min. Bertorelli is using to much helm and jarring the boat. If you watch closely, you'll see sudden rise and fall of the windward hull with change of course. This should be much smoother and so keep the flow at its optimum. Can't help feeling they should have Bundy or Roman Hagara helming Alinghi and not the current two incumbants, but nice start though.

Have i missed all the action, or will there be another race today?

I think that will be it. By the time they nip ashore, get a cup of tea and a biscuit they are likely to have run out of time to get back to the start line.

Not sure about Oracle's retro coloured golden mast. Think black carbon looks better.

So they win by 15:28 mins. Looks like the cup will be heading back to the US again soon sadly!

It was interesting to watch the two boats but it was not exactly match racing at it's best. I hope when it heads back to the states that Larry has the sense to revert back to the old system and stop buggering around in the courts.

Just over 6 minutes actually but if the conditions are different the result may be as well.

After his triumph in that totally boring first race of this daft match he told me on the phone that it was going to be sailed in foiling Moths in Weymouth Bay!
