Does the taller mast significantly increase performance in land?
Does it help the raw speed/pointing side of things or does it get into the clearer air above trees mainly helping in the lighter winds?

Yes and not neccesarliy to all of the above in no specific order!

I've been toying with the idea of a high aspect rig for a while. This may seem like a stupid question...
Could you take a hog stepped mast and cut it down to provide a long deck stepped mast? Or would this not work due to all the sheaves etc being in the wrong place?

Correct cc it will all be in the wrong place.

Unless maybe the hog stepped mast was a 'long' one in the first place? but they are probably rare?

Most of the successful old boats at Tamesis have 22ft. 6in. masts. These include the legendary 49 year old 'Passing Cloud' no. 1079 which sailed by Richard Harris won Cookham open last year and was 2nd at the recent Hampton S T.

So too, the lengendary , and much admired by Robert Harris, ADUR 7 Splatter. Trice a winner of the Cookham Open meeting, including one under the capaincy of Robert's extremely capable newphew Andrew.

Sorry I didn't realise Robert had an extremely capable Nephew called Andrew, is he any relation to the other Andrew ?

It's genetic all this sailing talent in the Harris family! Robert had the first Adur 7 1502 Helgel and did rather well with it too.

Other members of the sailing Harris family include Sue who probably crewed John in his 1964 Salcombe win and now crews Berry Ritchie in 'Crescendo' no. 607. Then there's John and Sue's daughter Sara who crewed for her late husband Martin Warren when they won Salcombe in 1990. Sara's son James no crews Alan Warren. The Andrew who won in 'Splatter' is John and Sue's second son. Sadly my son and daughter William and Jane don't seem to have that gene but they do go to Salcombe every year.
