MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Lift off

Hi

Just like to say hello as a newbie to the forum and Merlin owner.
Does anybody know any history of 3210 "lift off" I purchased her a couple of weeks ago from a nice guy down at Shoreham, she needs a couple of minor jobs mostly cosmetic. I have just finished off stripping the deck and have a couple of more jobs before re-varnishing.
I have seen a previous thread that mentions lift off as being a fast boat in her day, and thats great as I am too much of a novice and too long in the tooth to compete at anything other than my local club, so I didnt need the latest and greatest Merlin, but am looking forward to some exciting sailing.
Like so many others I fell for the Merlin as soon as I set eyes on one, and after sailing out of Shoreham on a great day I was hooked.

Thanks
Gary

Welcome Gary. You are dead right to be hooked on Merlins they are a fab boat to sail and a great bunch of guys and girls to party with.

I have no history for you but watch this space and someone will come forth.

Good luck and enjoy.

Use G4 sealer under the decks and as a sealer for traditional and single pack varnishes. It's cheap as chips and does a great job and you can get 3 coats on in a day in any temperature. It's the coating of choice over on the CVRDA for old boats if you want to go and have a chat to them you'll see they give it the seal of approval (perfect pun).

Hi Gary,

Welcome to this excellent class.

As per my other post my only experience with 3210 was at Bewl Valley SC where I was a member during the early/mid 90's. Lift Off resided there and was owned by Ian Ramus along side 3219, Nick Powells original CTales 3413 and the late great Chris Andrews 3473 French Mollusc. 3210 was, and still is, a very pretty, well built boat and went extremely well in virtually every condition that was thrown at it.

If continued to be well looked after she will go well and give many more years of pleasure.

Good to have you on board.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and advice.
And thanks for the background Richard, she will be given plenty of TLC.

I think Lift Off was originally owned by Peter Mann who was a member of Warsash Sailing Club.

Not to mention the fact that 3199, the Credit Card design from Mike Burnham, was the bestest of the lot! Oh to get my hands back on that boat! Before all but giving it away (this just predates the interest in classic/older boats)I loaned it to Ian Ridge who showed just how fast it could go in the Weston Winter series.
Come on Mike - time you got back afloat in person!!
Hamble regatta is looming

3210 'Lift Off' was built in 1980 by Rowsells in Exmouth for Peter Mann of Hamble SC. She is a Phil Morrison designed NSM Smoker's Satisfaction. I was lucky enough to own one of her sisters 3190 'Finlandia' and she was a quick and beautiful boat. Welcome to the class and I hope you enjoy your new beauty.
