Topic : MR 1640

Hello all, I've noticed from other threads that the Merlin Rocket community is very knowledgeable about old boats and helpful with details. I have bought a Merlin Rocket, but the only documentation I have is a paddle saying "1640 Different Drummer" and a maker's plate "Anderson Rigden & Perkins Ltd, Whitstable." To add some slight confusion the sail has number 634. From various articles and photos on the website I believe the paddle, and have insured it as number 1640. Can anyone tell me if my deductions are correct, I do not want to have duplicated an existing hull number and confuse insurance companies. Regards Mike

1640 was built by Anderson Rigden and Perkins of Whitstable to Mike Jacksons "Rakes Progress" design (1963-4.) his first Merlin Rocket design.
Look at the Centre Thwart and it should have the number on it. The design section of this web site has the perceived characteristics of this design.

The hull shape of 634 compared to 1640 ought to be different enough to even the untrained eye! But if you can find the number carved into the boat on the hog (middle plank of floor) or thwart (seat) then no need to ask further.

In the current yearbook it's recorded with the name of 'Hellman'
- not many people know that.

Thank all, this has been very helpful. 1640 it is then, the sail picked up from another boat. Regards, Mike.
