Topic : Wet rot

3333 was rescued from the boat park with patches of wet rot. These were dealt with, ie.leaving to dry, removing soft wood, epoxying and varnishing. However the rot seems to be persistent and I want to to do more to eradicate it.

Does anyone know of a treatment which might kill the rot, but not compromise the ability of the treated wood to be epoxyed and/or varnished?

I cant believe such a beautiful boat was left like that, when dan and james davies had her she was stunning! She even went to the dinghy show a few years back after a total revamp at paintcraft.
Depending on where the rot is I always chop it out and replace it, especially with a ship of that quality, it may take longer but well worth it,just epoxying over it usually seals the damp inand magnifies the original problem.Good luck with it,hope it will resurface on the circuit!!

I used wood rot hardener which seemed effective, but time will tell. I thought it seemed expensive as I am sure it is just cellulose lacquer thinned with acetone.

Drop Mervyn Allen a line (0208 231 8911).Seriously, he is a font of information for restoration/DIY tips. He avised me on a number of processes whilst restoring 908 which I would have otherwise never even thought of. One of them, and i'm sure he can explain properly, was having removed any rot, drill small holes horizontally into the infected area/planks and inject epoxy resin. Something to do with the moisture take up and epoxy curing.......... He has used this technique on both his vintage boats with oustanding success.

Shame that Precious? was left in such a sorry state. When in the hands of Dan Alsop she did very well and as ever looked beautiful.

Thanks for the advice. I've spoken to Mervyn. Thnaks to the responses, I now know that I've got a boat which should look good and be fast, neither of which its achieving at the moment. Must be the nut on the end of the tiller!
