Topic : A salutory tale!

We sailed my restored " Smokers Satisfaction 2914 " for the first time today and it felt very fast in light stuff. However, I only repaired the side decks replacing one from the transom to in front of the shroud and the other from the fore deck back to the shroud. This involved cutting the inwale? on both sides which forms one part of the stressed section which is the side deck. On one side the solid wood through which the shroud passes has pulled in under load because the cut inwale did not stop it. Only a couple of mill but quite a mess! Back to the drawing board! I think that I shall make a stainless steel plate which bolts over the whole area and folds over the inwale with the shroud passing through it. I cannot bear the thought of ripping both side deck assemblies off again.

Can you reinforce it underneath the deck, and cover the mess on top with a SS-lined bush perhaps?

No, it has pulled 6" of deck away from the rubbing strake and the deck has pushed the inwale in. If I do not put my solution into action I will have to replace the side deck and the inwale with no joins. The decks are painted (luckily) and it has a spaceframe so if I can attach to the spaceframe as well it should be indestructable. I started this post as indication of how structural the complete side deck assembly actually is.........not just somewhere to sit!

Have you considered letting Tunfnol into the deck often used on wood decks, use the dark brown paper grade as it does not absorb water. then put a bush with s/s insert in the tufnol. Reinforce underneath the deck if required.

Thank you for your suggestion John but I have already fixed the broken side with stainless sheet shaped over the inwale and bent round the space frame. The whole thing is screwed on and riveted to the spaceframe. looks quite sexy realy! Even though the other side (which I redecked) is ok I have to do that as well or the poor old boat will be 1/4 ton heavier on one side!
