MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Help needed - 901 Tiercel?

In a moment of madness I bought that pretty boat on ebay.
I went to get her yesterday and she is sound and a lovely shape - so I am pleased!

But: there is no number on the boat. The oldest set of sails look original to me (circa 1959 with reef points). They have the number 901, which is a Holt 'Nellie' design called 'Tiercel'

So if Tony Lane or anyone else knows more about her history, previous owners etc I am very interested

Aso: she doesn't have a mast. So anyone got an old ally mast that they are not needing?

Perhaps we (owners of older masts) should have an entry in "bits for sale" - along with the details/contacts?

Pat.
You're right, if she is no. 901 she is a Jack Holt built and designed Nellie.
The 1962 year book (the earliest YB I have after she was built) shows her name as 'Cannon 9' and her owner as R. Kemp, Green Gables,101 Alcester Rd,Hollywood, Birmingham and Ragley SC.
In 1963 she was owned by B. Davies, Waterside Cottage, Duck Lane, Welford-on-Avon, Warwicks at the same club.
The 1965 YB records the owner as R. Badderley, 37 Broom Road, Dunnington, Bidford-on-Avon, Warwicks again at Radley SC. He changed the name to 'Tiercel'and I think I remeber him as he was the club's class representative for many years.
In 1969 she was owned N.R.C.Haddon, 18 Albury Rd, Studley, Warwicks and still at Ragley SC.
I have been perhaps rightly criticized for putting peoples addresses on this forum in the past so I'll just show owners names for the last 30 years and if you want more please contact me direct.
The 1982 YB shows the owner as H. Cox in West Yorks. The later YBs don't show where she went from there.

Thanks for all your help everyone - this is a fantastic class!
Tony - I am increasingly confident she is 901 as I bought from West Yorks and she doesn't look as if she has seen much action recently, so that all ties up. I think I prefer Tiercel to Cannon 9.
Re masts - Colin has given me dimensions of his, which looks pretty suitable. Richard yours maybe good too? But you are further away so I might try Colin's first.
I am sort of debating whether to go for a traditional rig, maybe 22'6" or stick to modern measurements so I can use my old sails from my modern boat? The old sails look high aspect ratio but are not long enough on the luff for a 22'6" rig - I guess they have just shrunk with age.
Anyway thanks again for all your help.
