Topic : Pyefleet Week 2009

Pyefleet Week is a family sailing week held at Brightlingsea Sailing Club, last year for the first time we had 6 Merlins racing. This years dates are from the 1st to the 8th August. We have 4 new Merlins at the club and all are going to the Nationals. Being just before the Nationals this would give us all good practice. Camp site very close and also lots of members with spare beds!!
E mail me if you need further detail.

We've pencilled it into the calendar again as we thoroughly enjoyed last year - great sailing and great hospitality!

Just some more information, from someone who started off as a visitor to Brightlingsea, and has since joined based on experiences at Pyefleet week....

Family sailing: so you can watch the kids in their Mirrors or Toppers, while you are racing at the same time.
Brightlingsea: so don't be surprised when the winners of a few Olympic Gold Medals walk past.
One race a day: but it alternates AM and PM. The idea being you might get a light land breeze in the morning, and a great force 4 sea breeze the next day in the afternoon - giving something for everyone. It also means that if you wish to go off-site visiting with non-sailors, you get from lunch time on one day to lunch time on the next to recover before the next race.
The finish line: is about 10 yards from the slip way, which is about 5 yards from the dinghy park, and about 10 yds from the bar - at which you can buy beer still wearing your wet suit.
Good yet cheap lunches, and evening meals are arranged each evening inthe clubhouse just aftr the sailing - with entertainment later.
1 year in 10 (and that was last year!) has no sunshine. In all other cases its sitting drinking beer on the steps in the sun overlooking the water, watching the other races.

Things to look out for:
BODs (Brighlingsea One Designs) who don't need to be on starboard to have right of way!
Shallow launching when the tide is out: a lifting rudder is better than a fixed.
Long races: none of this "45 minutes is enough" - that is about 1 lap at BSea.
The 8 mph speed limit near the finishing line! Means the Tornado's have to drop their kites before hand.

Great fun, well worth the drive.

Have they installed a speed camera yet?

No, but the Harbourmaster has a speed gun which he points at boats. Fortunately this is usually at jet skis which he pursues at great haste in a boat called "Dracula" with a flashing blue light. He even catches and prosecutes the occasional one! This mostly goes on "round the corner" and therefore out of sight of the clubhouse but sometimes this sport takes place in the creek and can be fun to watch.
