MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Merlin Rocket 2914

I have just purchased (for very little money) Merlin 2914 Smokers Satisfaction.
The vendor was a pleasant, optimistic man and thought that the boat was ready to sail with a few minor repairs, well, the only way I would have taken it out would have been for a viking burial! Perhaps not though as it's too wet to burn! I intend to repair, not restore, this for club racing and wonder if anyone has any memories of it. It is red now but seems to have been orange originaly and called Burning Lather.

I saw this at Dalgety Bay a few years back at a Scottish Traveller and it was a bit rough then so with a few years more of non TLC it's not a surprise that it is not great. Hope that you can get it in some order.

It was dirt cheap though for a Rowsell Smokers. Should be a good boat when you get it afloat.

Even dirt cheaper than that, 100. It had sat in a garden next to the sea for 2 years with no cover. Any other wooden boat would have disintegrated completley, this has just disintegrated a bit........good jib though......

She was built by Spud probably in 1974 for B. Lavin of Hollingworth Lake S.C.
The 1982 YB records a new owner D. Pipe at Llandegfedd SC.
In 1993 she was shown as being owned by G. Fletcher at Whitby SC.

£100!!! Blimey. I was going to call him myself but I have one sitting in a garage doing nothing anyway, but they are such a great boat for the river.

Only an old idiot like myself would have bothered with this boat, I like a challenge, when you consider that an up and sailing satisfaction can be had for about 500 quid. By the way it is 6ft 8ins wide. Is that normal for this design? We will be sailing on a small pond when there is not enough wind to bother with our lovely Tasar.

Please come and join in the events for the vintage wing and cvrda (classic and vintage racing dinghy association) - lots of old boats and some of us older folks and a good mix of puddles, ditches and decent lakes to sail.

That is right John they are quite wide and were a step closer to the full width we see today. I have had some projects in my time but currently don't have one on at the moment so thought about it but have not got the time at the moment.

Good luck.
