MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : GHOST RIDER renamed SPACE CRAFT

Anyone know what happened to this boat I last saw at Netley around 1992? Sailnumber in the 2600+ completely refitted, new deck etc at that date, um, very open plan, no thwart, the centreboard array being supported by two long boards triangulated with the keel, making a neat step up for the crew when tacking and facing the usual climb to the other side. Not an important topic; nostalgia.

There was a very oddly fitted out Ghost Rider that appeared on ebay ages ago, probably 3 or 4 years.

There is a Ghost Rider in good nick but that never seems to move on the hard at Hamble.

Wasnt Ghost Rider the Merlin that David Robinson, sailing at Lymington, capsized, abandoned and left to drift out of Hurst narrows and into Christchurch Bay. He was uninsured and the boat ended up on the beach somewhere. Luckily, he worked for Proctors as the mast was broken in a couple of places.

No Barry that was "Tantrum" no 2000 in 1967. Bob and David Hopkins (Hoppy.) did a very good job in rebulding her.

Thankyou very much for the responses;
A 'ghost rider' in good nick at Hamble might be the one, even if resold by ebay. The "Spacecraft" was very odd and very spacey! A play on words too 'rocket' and so forth. If Mike ex Hamble is the mike of Merlins and 505 at Netley, I'm very very happy to hear from you. In the long run perhaps a photo will show up (the boat was totally repainted in epoxy eggshell blue, very pale, almost turquoise tint and varnished West System absolutely according to the book) and I doubt it needed redoing for a decade . . . . . soooooh; thanks again.

Matt,

I'm not sure where you saw the boat at Netley? Was it at the Civil Service Saiing Club, at Netley Cliff? The main Netley Club, along in the country park, has Merlins but none that match the description of yours! There is of course 'Wotnot'..... but at that time the Merlin that was afloat the most was my own 'Credit Card' design - a great one off for sailing in estuary conditions.

We did have a Ghostie for a while, but that was an all varnished Rowsell boat and was, as they say, bog standard.

I'm not sure what the story is about the Ghost Rider at Hamble. A couple of weekends back, I met with Mike 'ex of Hamble' and the Ancient Geek in the King and Queen for a beer or two and the subject cam up then. The hull is now a midnight blue..... not the colour you saw at all!

Mike.... you still up for the K&Q Pursuit Race?

Well, hi Mike and Dougal!
Regrettably I'm in the South West of France . . . . well it has its ups and downs (mountains rather than waves)

Last time I saw the boat was at Netley Cliff; it was raced at a National championship by Colin W, probably 1990-1991 or thereabouts. Mike was busy letting me in on trapeze technique.

I don't get about, rarely to the UK, and for the moment I don't use email, so I am sorry to be using the forum here for chat, yet . . . it is a delight to realise the K&Q events still run, even to see the Hamble races still run etc. If I had a hat, I'd take it off to Dougal for putting his own design afloat.

I'm not much of an internet sailor either, yet if Mike has an idea how we can stay in touch, get up to date . . . .
