Topic : re-varnishing carbon

Whats the best way to remove the old varnish of a boom before re-varnishing it, I've got rid of the lose stuff, but need to remove the more stubborn varnish before re-doing?

last time I did it just used sand paper of various grades. you don't have to remove 100% of it

Has anyone repainted a white Superspar mast? If so what paint do you use please?

Any 2 pack white yacht paint should do I think, e.g. International. 1 pack would get scratched up too quickly in places really.

Thanks Ross, much appreciated. Had thought of asking Superspar, but since we were discussing it......

Actually we used International Toplac (1 pack paint) on our spare Superspar for the want of anything better.

No problems whatsoever 12 months later, 3 of which were in use when my Chipstow broke.

I'd prefer to use polyurethane varnish because of it's UV proof properties, but i think you get away with the better 1 pack paints because they are obviously not designed to be clear. Toplac is actually quite hard once cured, but it does take rather longer to get there becasue it doesn't cure chemically.

With this weather if you want to paint it urgently i'd use Toplac or the Blakes equivalent with no hesitatation.

I wet and dry'ed my Superspars mast and used a can of 'Appliance White' spray paint from Halfords on it last time. Seems to have worked alright, although after 4 years the lower part of the mast looks pretty tatty now from pole impact damage.

Mind you, having ripped the lower 1m of track off on saturday, I'm going to have to repaint again, so may follow Chris M's advice, (not that he thinks too highly of my paintwork generally...)
