Megan, can you check the MR bank account to see if we have paid for this year - changed banks and they have screwed up most of our standing orders & direct debits. Membership number 2577? If not then I'll fill out a new form. Thanks

Good to hear that the banks are maintaining their usual high standard of service as they try to retain our confidence in their skills at managing our money. Bloody marvellous.

And what does BANKER rhyme with?

Funny thing though, millions of you have bank accounts and don't keep your cash under the mattress. Maybe we are providing some sort of service after all!
Posted: 17/01/2009 12:27:24 By: Banker |
Perhaps the lack of a workable alternative leads to the continued use of banks by 'the public', and also leads to their patronage being misinterpreted as support for the actions of the banks?

Banks earn very little if anything from those who have current accounts in credit, it is those of us in debit with overdrafts who pay for the shareholders bubley etc So how can some banks charge 21.9% or more for credit when the bank of England rate is so much lower?
Posted: 18/01/2009 00:19:42 By: Skint |
Maybe because you are skint and don't have any collateral - makes you risky - currently my borrowings are tracking at 0.25% under base - so I'm paying 1.25% - whoppeee

Neither a borrower nor lender be!

Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.

Was it Polonius who had a saying about Neither a gloater or a smart arse be; perhaps it was someone else?

Sorry to be a pain but isn't it about time that this could be done on line?

Not without a third party taking (say) 10% of the fee to process transactions!
Posted: 02/02/2009 19:16:12 By: Mags |
Floppy,
If you have internet banking? You will have the sort code & AC No of the NMROA therefore do an electronic transfer of funds and advise our treasurer of your details. Alternatively set up a DD or SO online. Be careful of SO though as I have found out in the past they do not have any guarantee as DD's do if payments go astray!

Its not that expensive. Most UK based processors charge 2.9% plus a standard charge of 20pence.
So on a membership fee of 25.00 thats 93pence. Not so bad really.
Especially considering my stamp cost 27pence to post my cheque.

I don't think Megan has DD processing, although the Laser Assoc give a discount on membership for DD, so it is possible and I guess as it saves time and effort.
Paypal charge 3.4% + 20p at entry level. No Chex charge 2.9% + 20p, about 1.00 on the membership fee.
I don't know what is involved in setting up DD for the reciever, but I would suggest that the assoc could think about charging say 25 by DD and 27 by other method - cash, cheque, S.O and so also afford to offer an online mechanism such as PayPal/NoChex without losing income.
The advantage being that this would encourage DD and I would expect reduce admin/chasers etc, as the onus is on the members now to actively cancel their membership rather than being chased, and would also allow the ability to collect funds online, for those that want to pay that way.

As Alan said
the bank details are on the membership form so just do a transfer quoting your membership number and name and let me know you have done it
free tin of pegigree for anybody doing it that way
Posted: 03/02/2009 09:21:28 By: megan |
You will also find that the banks require a minimum number of people before they will set up the arrangements for an organisation to use DDs - used to be a miminum membership of 1,000.

I pay mine by standing order set up by internet banking where the onus is on the sender not on the collector. Has worked for the last 4 years and of course if you choose to leave the association (but who would?) you just stop the order.
