The aspect ration actually refers to the main sail, not the mast. So a high aspect mast, is one that fits a high aspect main sail, which essentially means tall and thin. In order words this mast is no good for short and wide mainsails (the modern norm)=> I suspect this mast was build specifically for an older classic or vintage merlin, used on the river, where the extra height is beneficial in catching the less disturbed wind higher up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(wing) |
