The first compass I ever used (on a dinghy) was a Tak Tik but now I also have an old fashioned silva tactical compass, on a class that doesn't allow electronics, and quite frankly I prefer the visual impact of the old fashioned type, it seems easier to visualise the shifts with that, than a bare digital 'number'. If I was fitting a Merlin from scratch I would go for a single big silva tactical on a bracket at the top of the king post.

Tackticks are very very rare second hand. I got one second hand (thanks RB), but that is the only one I have ever seen second hand.

Being a laser sailor now, as no want wants to crew me, I use the small 103R Silva at approx £80.

The big Silva is about £110 and the Tacktick T060 is about £210.

The article in the link below give a reasonable, if slightly confusing at times, talk on both types.

Alan you remembered me.

I'd crew for you now and then as I know how lonely it can get sailing on one's own (OK myself) but i'm afraid I don't fit your 11st criteria!
