Hi,
Can anyone tel me how how wide the various NSM's are? Thinking of an NS1 or 2, maybe a 4 but access width to my garage is limited!
Cheers, Dave

The NSM1&2 I owned were both 6ft 10in in old money NSM4 is a little wider - anyone with a tape measure & and NSM4? I think it's more like 7 ft than max beam.
There is also a little variation in the wooden boats from different builders
You can tip the boat a bit to get it through the door, the door jambs on the Ranelagh boathouse have cutouts at gunwale level to give another couple of inches

Thanks for that, 6' 10" if fine -it will just about make it. The problem is the gap between the buildings, we have had wider boats down there but it's a real pain.

My NSM1 only just fits into the garage, and the gap between the door frames is 7ft exactly. You couldnt take the boat through any smaller a gap, and I would advise protection on each gunwhale EVERY time. I use some slit pieces of pipe insulation ever since I gouged a chunk out of the poor boat one day soon after buying her!

We have taken a Tales down our lane but it's a real faf getting it through, the garage is a double so no probs there. What a great idea the maximum beam rule was!
Just a further thought which NSM is best inland? I guess a 1 or a 2 but which? Lots of NSM1's on the board but few 2's at the mo.
Thanks for all the advice - Dave.

Dear Dave, The NSM2 is a better weight carrier than the NSM1 although I suspect that there was only a minimal difference in the shape. I am now sailing a plastic NSM2 built by Simon Bagley which goes well on the river but will obviously struggle on open water.I think there may be one of these on the market currently.

Dear Dave, 3112 was the first Rowsell NSM 1 and yesterday it measured 6ft 10in across the widest point. A relief for me to know because, for several reasons, I haven't had to try to put it in the garage with a 7ft wide door opening yet! So you were right Chris when I asked the question last year. 3112 is a much better sea boat than 2789, the September Girl I owned last year.

There is a plastic NSM2 on the for sale list, not a boat I have seen about though.
NSM1's are reckoned not so good on restricted water as either NSM2 or Smoker's Satisfaction. But Phil Dalby won the River Champs in Dire Straits, an Omega NSM1 a few years ago and Smasher went well at Hampton as long as Guy pointed it in the right direction and didn't try to smoke and sail at the same time, so did Hedgehog Sandwich
