MERLIN ROCKET FORUM

Topic : Salcombe report

We now enter a tricky period of negotiatons and bribes, trying to squeeze the Salcombe report into an issue of Yachts and Yachting sometime soon.

In the meantime, a 'lite' report is available....though since I wasn't there you may need to correct me if I've got something wrong!

More photos from Fotoboat and Emma Flight are linked in too.

I hadn't really looked at the past winners page till this thread - it is really interesting bit of class history. If it needs correcting we should get it sorted. Perhaps we could add some more info - crew’s names particularly. How many can you remember? and why isn't Kevin Driver on the designers list?

Agree with that.

It only occured to me last night that we dont have full names on some of those lists - might be nice to clarify who's who! Especially that 'L Smith' bloke who won the champs in 76....could have been anyone!

Intitials are good enough for cricketers it's only the more moddish sports that use christian even nik names.

Aren't cricketers names better known in that first names are more often used in the more frequent match reports etc (at least for first class cricketers). Try using only initials for Pakistani cricketers, no one would know who you were talking about. If the Salcombe honours board is an item of historical record, first names or their diminutive would avoid any possible doubt.

I setup most of the past winners pages some years back, and send updates to Mags each year. I pulled the data from the MROA Year Books. If I made some typos will update next time round. Hope they are of interest, including the stats listed at the end.

PS always wanted to add Crew names to Salcombe list but don't have the detials.

Not sure can have crews for ST results as may vary at different events, i.e. based on the helm.

Happy to setup other, e.g. Grand Slam if people find of interest.

A look at Wisden suggests surnames and initials regardless of Race or Country.

Beecher Moore seems to be the exception (at least on the National Championship winners rostrum).

Maybe because like the fictional detective Morse, Beecher-Moore was known by his surname only.

What was Beecher's first name then?

Have just googled him and in fact he was called Peter Cook Beecher Moore. Maybe someone can tell us more.

As from next year you'll see him down as P.C. Beecher Moore then to keep you lot happy....

No wish to start a tit for tat with Barry but his son is Chadwick Beecher Moore as is a cousin Nan Beecher Moore, not unknown for people to be known by the first part of their double barreled surnames Graham Donald of Ranelagh was the same his christian name was William.
Yes it was "Moores Modern Methods" now I think Lamson-Morres? A delightful Art-Deco office just off Smithfield next door to another well known sailor Bill Kempner. In the reports of the raiding of his Middle Temple Flat during the Profumo thingy he was refered to as Mr P Beecher Moore. Whatever he was a lovely man a diligent correspondent he had many friends appreciating thatv whilst they were very much his friends they may not be friends with each other, a good trick if you can do it. He did.
I loved Bob Fishers comment that in the 1950's before the swinging sixties he and his wife Bobby swung!
