Morning John,

Am in the unfamiliar position of having family competing at S, but e-observing the regatta!

Spotted Mike & Jane, Si & Phil and Pat & Jilly sailing a course of their own design instead of the one everyone else used... is this the reason for the protest in R2?

Good luck to all competing; it was a difficult sail yesterday pm!

GGGGGGG

Yes, the course was put up and then changed about 15 mins before the start making a loop from 5-2 not 5-3. Unfortuate for Simon as he had shot off on the 1st run with a massive lead by the ferry and looking to keep it.

In case anyone's interested a quick run-down on the 1st 2 days, after Saturday blowing a gale and immensely wet (boats held on Batson) Sunday cleared up by the start of the morning race and was F4 and sunshine, building towards the end, creekhopping course including white-knuckle ride out of the bag into Frogmore on a dead swirly run, Tom Stewart posts 1st win. Afternoon about F6 and gusty with it particularly the bag, controversy over course scuttles the front runner. Couple of masts come down can't remember whose. Monday morning much the same but with more water so creekhopping again, much capsizing in the swatters in the main channel, Will Warren takes win from super-lightweight Mike and Jane, afternoon still just as blowy, start brought forward to 2pm because of combination of tide and forecast, Taxi Davies leads from the start line and picks up big gust through the ferry on Mill Bay the followers see Dan Alsop try the town side, sadly he gets to the fairway whilst still in operation and is lobbed, the followers come over in a pack and attempt synchronised gybing just under the watchhouse, Ross starting the manouvre with a wonderful pirouette that so nearly takes out Andy Dalby who falls in too in an attempt to avoid the carnage! Standing ovation from the terrace.

So do I but as I am now back at work someone else will have to oblige.

Good week so far for the mastmakers, Rien Zilvold had his disintegrate into 3 pieces when hit by a gust Sunday afternoon he didn't think he did anything wrong, Dave Doobrie was sailing Judith's boat with Jeremy W and I saw them sitting down by the fuel barge yesterday morning with the rig in pieces, don't know what happened.

Couple of boats (including Dan) had F/way below their result and a 51st place.

What does F/Way mean ?

F/way = Fairway infringement

At Salcombe starts, there is a channel maintained for other Harbour traffic users which sailors are not allowed to enter from the 5 minute gun until a number of minutes (can't remember how long but maybe 5) after the start. This channel has got wider in recent years, but entering results in immediate disq

“Good week so far for the mastmakers” Are you having a laugh? Or are you taking the mick? Do you know how long it takes to rebuild a broken mast back to race winning quality? Having been on the edge for four days and looking at the forecast for the week it gone past razor blades and the Samaritans “Samaritans provides confidential non-judgemental emotional support, 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair” readding flip reports from bloke whaching sailing in wind recorded an average speed 7.9 mph gusting 29.4 mph. And to day a much beter day 12mph gusting 19 mph.!!
Lets be real what you want is a mast builder with a sence of ummer and no plans for a holliday

"Do you know how long it takes to rebuild a broken mast"

- surely then it should be charged appropriately, making new for old replacement more likely especially if there's a trade in value for the broken one. This would result in a better second hand mast market too.

It would be good if SYC could post a copy of the protest findings on their website.. they might be worth reading.

I have never seen two boats awarded 2nd place as redress on top of the 2nd that was already awarded.. unless I am mis-reading the results, which is obviously possible.

What has happened to all the web cams that used to be in salcombe, ie Fore street, Coffe shop, SYC race box etc

Only got the one on Portlemouth

The protesting boats have been awarded average points for that race. The points given will vary each day as the average changes.

What were they protesting for and why were they given average points?

Why were Mike & Jane, Simon & Phil and Pat & Jilly awarded improved placings for race two?

Posted: 09/07/2008 09:18:51
By: Measurement Man
guess would be that they protested committee over course change pre start

I heard (admittedly through a Chinese whisper) that it was as much, if not more, to do with a rescue boat telling the next bunch not to go the wrong way... Hopefully we can all find out from a non-bias person that knows....

Well done to all, a proper sailing week by all accounts.

Out of interest does anyone know who was the first boat to finish that received no sponsorship ie. free sails, free boat, sailing professional etc.

By: Cat C
Does that include parental sponsorship...?
